FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's and women's cross-country teams will be competing at the NCAA West Regional on Friday, hosted by the University of Washington at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle. The championships will begin at 12 p.m. (PT) for the women's 6k, followed by the men's 10k starting at 1:00 p.m. (PT)

Jefferson Park Golf Course consists of multiple 2k loops on flat fairways crossing some cart paths. The course was the site of the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, the USATF Club Nationals, the NCAA West Regional Championships in 2012, and the Washington Invitational beginning in 2014. Spikes are recommended for competition.
THE FIELD: In the men's 10k race will feature 32 teams from the West spanning programs from the Big Sky, Big West, Mountain West, Pac-12, West Coast and Western Athletic conferences. The women's 6k will feature a total of 37 teams.

THE RANKINGS: The field includes five men's teams that are currently ranked among the top-30 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I rankings. That group includes No. 4 Stanford, No. 7 Oregon, No. 17 Washington, No. 20 UCLA and No. 24 Boise State. On the women's side, five teams are also currently ranked: No. 4 Oregon, No. 9 Boise State, No. 11 Stanford, No. 12 Washington, and No. 30 Gonzaga.
ABOUT THE NCAA WEST REGIONAL: Fullerton will return to Seattle for the NCAA West Regional as the University of Washington previously hosted in 2012. Jefferson Park Golf Course has been the site of the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, the USATF Club Nationals, the NCAA West Regional Championships in 2012, and the Washington Invitational beginning in 2014.
TITAN HISTORY AT NCAA WEST REGIONAL: Cal State Fullerton's best men's team finish at the NCAA West Regional was ninth place with a total of 210 points in 1993. In 1992, the women placed seventh with a score of 161. Mike Tansley has the best men's Titan finish at the NCAA West Regional, finishing seventh in 1993 with a time of 30:19.8. Heather Killen has the best women's individual finish, with a time of 17:28.0 in 1991.
LAST YEAR'S MEET: Cal State Fullerton completed the 2014 men's and women's cross-country seasons with 22nd and 26th place finishes, respectively, at the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 14 at the Stanford Golf Course. The men's squad, was led by Jose Penaloza as he completed the 10k course in a time of 31:07.8 finishing in 81st place. On the women's side, for the second consecutive season the Titans were led by Emily Taylor as she finished the 6k race in a time of 21:50.7, which was good for 84th.
QUALIFYING FOR THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP: The top two teams in each of the nine NCAA regionals will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championship, Saturday, Nov. 21. Once the top-18 teams earn their automatic bids, 13 additional teams are selected by the NCAA to join the races in Louisville, Ky.
Individually 38 men and 38 women (top four per region) who are not on an advancing team earn automatic bids, only if they earn a top-25 regional finish. The top-25 runners in each race receive All-Region recognition. Once all automatic bids are set, two individuals from across each region are selected as at-large competitors for both the men's and women's races.
A LOOK AT THE 2015 TITANS: Junior Jose Penaloza has led Cal State Fullerton's men's cross country team across the finish line in each of its five meets this season. The native of Garden Grove, Calif., has also recorded three top-10 finishes. Redshirt sophomore Joe Casco and seniors Tim Reed and Jeff Little have showed consistency throughout the year, while freshman Sam Pimentel produced the best race of his career thus far at the Big West Championship on Oct. 31 On the women's side, senior Emily Taylor and junior newcomer Sierra Ungerman have been Fullerton's two top finishers in 2015. Each has recorded three top-20 finishes this season, while junior Pamela Pelayo was Fullerton's top finisher at the Big West Championship.
LONGEST-TENURED COACH: As the 2015 season is underway, cross country and track and field head coach John Elders enters his 28th season at the helm of each program making him the longest tenured head coach in the history of Cal State Fullerton. Elders was tied with former fencing head coach Heizaburo Okawa (1982-2006) and former men's soccer coach Al Mistri (1981-2005) for 25 years of service at Fullerton. The Orange County native is coach of cross country, women's indoor track and field, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
