Titans Back on the Track to Host the Annual Ben Brown Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men and women's track and field squad will host the first home meet of the 2015 season this weekend as they welcome over 20 teams to participate in the two-day Ben Brown Invitational at Titan Track Complex starting on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and finishing up on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. with the men's 5,000-meter run.

The men's track and field team will feature student-athletes competing in 23 different events spanning the throwing, sprinting, jumping and distance events.  The women's squad will compete in 21 events over the two days at Titan Track Complex.

Friday, Mar. 13

The Titans and the rest of the field will ease into the two-day meet on Friday, as the competitors will be able to vie for the top spot in only five field events.  The action will start at 10:00 a.m. with the men's hammer throw(A), the women's hammer throw and the men's javelin will follow at 12:00 p.m., while the men's hammer throw (B) and the women's javelin will round out the events for the day at 2:00 p.m.

All of the Titans competing in the hammer throw competition will kick off the meet in the "A" group as JaQuan Scott, Emmanuel Martinez, Steven Parsons and Trevor Gorwin will try to set the tone for Fullerton as the first competitors.  Amanda Mercado, Jessica Flores, Alexandria Kemp, Tayla Schultz and Catherine Craig will attempt to do the same for the women's side in the hammer throw.

The Javelin competition will feature Daniel Walker in his season debut and teammate Kenneth Callinan for the men and Taylor Frank, Ifunanya Gwacham, Leah Stevens, Nicolette Garcia for the women.  It will be the first meet action for the women in the javelin competition this season.

Saturday, Mar. 14

Jumps

The final day of competition will begin with the jumpers as Garcia, Gwacham and Sevens will be right back in competition and join Taylor Frank in the women's high jump.   Steven Williams and Malik Johnson will get their first action of the Ben Brown Invite on Saturday as they compete in the men's high jump.

The Pole Vault competition will follow as Kimberly Amaya and Bryn Williamson for the Titan women join Alexander Ostrowski and Paris Pijuan second of four jumping events scheduled on the day.  Lane Tran, Johnathan Tolentino, and Brooke Hardge for the women will all compete for the first time during the weekend in the long jump competition that directly follows the pole vault event.

Freshman Laura Hamann will compete alongside Gwacham in the final jumping competition of the meet, as they both will look to come out on top in the triple jump.

Throws

Amanda Mercado, coming off a very successful indoor season, will open up the throwing events as the only Titan woman representing in the shot put event.  Austin Flores will join the throwing group of Gorwin, Ostrowski, Scott and Parsons in the men's shot put.

Tayla Schultz will compete in the Discus throw event for the second-straight meet and will look to improve on her outing at the RCC Open.  Scott, Flores and Parsons will round out their throwing events in the discus, also for the second-consecutive meet.

Sprints / Hurdles / Distance

The largest contingent of Titan Track will round out the two-day annual meet at Titan Track Complex with events spanning from 11:15 a.m. on Saturday to the last event of the weekend at 8:45 p.m.  The event with the most Titans competing is the 100m Dash, with 16 total sprinters from the men's and women's track teams vying for the top prize.  Joshua Gordon, Chaz Harmon, Lane Trane, Mason Guzman-Sanchez, Keawe Tolson, Tolentino, and Steven Williams will represent the men while Alexis Stewart, Alexandra Stewart, Darnisha Loftis-McKnight, Brooke Hardge, Taylor Griffin, Elizabeth Claustro and Hamann will represent the Titan women.

Fresh off of her Big West Female Track Athlete of the Week honors, Janaya Shorty will jump right back into action in the 400m Dash while Deena Pierce will push Shorty every step of the way as the only other Titan representative.  Torry Moline and Nick Reynolds will be running the 400m Hurdle for the men as will India Owens for the women.

Nick Sole will compete in his only individual race of the meet in the 200m dash and will be part of the 4x100m Relay team to complete his weekend.

The distance runners will be well rested after having to wait until mid-day on Saturday see their first action of the weekend as Sean Graham and TJ Moffit join Tejera Dial, Emily Taylor, Katie Bathgate, Michelle Botello and Abby Buckhoff in the 1,500m run.  The 5000m run will be the final competition of the weekend and will feature David Ramirez, Brandon Perry, Tim Reed, Jose Penaloza, Jeff Little and Kevin Russell on the men's side and Arianna Fuentes, Celinda Manzo, Amanda Crissinger, Nisreen Rizk and Lauren Carr for the women.

2014 Ben Brown Invitational

Cal State Fullerton continued its strong start to the 2014 spring season, as both the women and men's teams came in first at the Ben Brown Invitational over the weekend.  The host Titans put up a 191.5 points on the weekend to edge Utah Valley (185.5) on the women's side of things, while the Fullerton men posted 189 points to tie with Utah Valley. Overall, the Titans finished the weekend with 12 top-four finishes.
