Titans Mourn Passing of Former Football Coach Jim McAllister

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Athletics Department and Titan Football lost a member of its family recently with the passing of former assistant coach Jim McAllister. He was 75 years old.

McAllister coached at Cal State Fullerton from 1983-87 under Hall of Fame head coach Gene Murphy serving as the administrative assistant, offensive advisor and defensive front coordinator during his tenure.

During McAllister’s time with the Titans, Cal State Fullerton accumulated a 33-26 record and appeared in the California Bowl in 1983, winning back-to-back Pacific Coast Athletic Association titles in 1983 and 1984

In 1984, the Titans posted their best record in program history, 11-1, recording wins over Boise State, Hawai’i, Idaho, Colorado State, Utah State, Pacific, San Jose State, Nevada, Long Beach State, Fresno State and New Mexico State. Fullerton was led by quarterback Damon Allen and a roster that included more than a dozen future professional players.

A 1961 graduate of Whittier College, McAllister also served as Murphy’s recruiting coordinator and worked a previous stint at CSF as defensive coordinator under Pete Yoder during the 1974 season.

Prior to returning to Cal State Fullerton, McAllister spent seven years as athletic director and chairman of the physical education department at Brea-Olinda High School, where he also was head football coach for six seasons. He compiled a 43-18-2 record with the Wildcats capped by an 11-1-1 Orange League Championship season in 1981.

He was recruited to Whittier College by Don Coryell and became a small college All-American center and nose guard. Following his graduation, McAllister was an assistant coach at Whittier High (1961), El Monte High (1962-64) and Alhambra High (1965-71), where he also was an athletic director.

He was an assistant at Utah State (1972-73) before coming to Fullerton for its final Division II season. He assisted at Orange High (1975) before going to Brea in 1976. He attended Whittier High School and was an All-Pacific League center.
