Redondo Beach native Ted Silva made 94 career appearances with the Titans over three seasons, but it was his effort in 1995 that cemented his name among the Titan baseball greats.
After being used strictly a reliever for Augie Garrido’s Titans in 1993 and 1994, Silva added “starter” to his resume in `95 and became a double threat as a closer on Fridays and a starter on Sundays.
The 1995 Titans steamrolled their competition, large-in-part to Silva’s dominance on the mound. He finished the 1995 season with a staggering 18-1 record with six saves to boot. He posted a 2.83 ERA in 29 appearances (19 starts) and struck out 142 batters in 152.2 innings. He also tossed the Titans’ first nine-inning no-hitter on Apr. 24, 1995, against Pacific.
That year in Omaha – his second trip in pinstripes – Silva got the call in the opening game and earned the victory over Stanford, 6-5. He went 7.1 innings and was the beneficiary of a 3-run Titan seventh inning that broke a 3-3 tie. Silva also got the nod in the championship game against USC. He wrapped up his Titan career with a 7.1-inning effort, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out five without a walk. The Titans won that game, 11-5, earning the school its third baseball national championship.
In his first two seasons with the Titans, Silva made 65 appearances and recorded 20 saves in 112 combined innings. For his career, Silva was 26-7 with a 2.92 ERA and he recorded 257 strikeouts in 264.2 innings pitched. His 26 career saves currently ranks third in the Fullerton all-time record book
Silva was a two-time All-American, a consensus first-teamer in 1995, and was also the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year in 1995. He also pitched for Team USA in 1994 and would go on to be drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 21st round of the MLB First Year Player Draft in June of 1995.
Following a number of years of professional baseball, Silva moved into coaching, making stops at Fullerton, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount and now Nebraska, where he is the associate head coach under skipper Darrin Erstad.
