FULLERTON, Calif. – Former USC technical coordinator Jeffrey Liu has joined Cal State Fullerton as its new volunteer assistant coach, head coach Ashley Preston announced on Monday.
Liu spent three seasons as the technical coordinator for the Trojans' women's volleyball and currently serves as the technical coordinator for the U.S. Women's National Team. Liu served on the USA Volleyball staff, as the team won the 2017 Pan American Cup gold medal and qualified for the finals week of the World Grand Prix. He also spent two seasons as the technical director for USC's men's program and the beach team.
"I coached against Jeff in Baltimore and am excited that we'll coach together in the gym," said Preston. "He has a wealth of knowledge from coaching with Mick Haley and Karch Kiraly and I know will be a great addition to our staff."
During his time with the Trojans, he helped lead the women to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including one of the best seasons in USC volleyball history in 2015. That season Southern California went 33-3 during the regular season en route to claiming the Pac-12 Championship and the No.1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans advanced to the Elite Eight in both 2015 and 2017. USC finished second in the conference in 2017.
Before his stint at USC, Liu previously served one year as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County women's volleyball team for the 2014 season. While there, the Retrievers went 10-15 overall with a 4-8 mark in the America East Conference. With UMBC, Liu was responsible for all aspects of DataVolley statistical collection, breakdown, and analysis, and was primarily responsible for coaching middle blockers and defense. While with the Retrievers, Liu helped freshmen middles Paola Rojas and Marissa Duncan earn selections to the America East All-Rookie Team.
Liu has also served as an assistant coach in the USA Volleyball High Performance Program. He helped both the 2015 Select A2 Invitational Team and the A3 National Training Program Team to second-place finishes at respective tournaments. In 2016, Liu served as the associate head coach of the USAV Select A2 Invitational Team and helped lead the squad to a semifinal tournament appearance.
Liu was also a volunteer court coach from 2014-16 for the USAV High Performance tryouts and has served as a DataVolley Intern and volunteer assistant coach with the U.S. Women's National Team.
Liu gained his first collegiate coaching experience at University of Saint Joseph (DIII) in West Hartford, Conn., as assistant coach and technical skills director (2012-14). During that time, Liu was also a head coach at the CT Volleyball Academy (2011-14). He was a co-founder of the academy and was also the academy's webmaster and social media director. Since 2014, he has also served as a court coach for the Gold Medal Squared Coaches Clinics.
Liu graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in business and technology in 2008. While at Stevens, the Livingston, N.J. native founded the men's club volleyball team and served as the squad's assistant coach and four-year team captain.
While in college, Liu coached at Livingston High School as the boys' junior varsity assistant coach in his first two seasons (2004-05), the girls' junior varsity assistant coach for two seasons (2005-06) and an assistant coach for the girls' varsity team for six seasons (2006-11). His teams went 104-26 while he was on staff, won four conference titles, and won the 2011 NJSIAA Group 4 State Championship.
Liu is USA Volleyball Beach CAP and USA Volleyball CAP II certified. He also has Level I training in Gold Medal Squared and is a Level II certified Double Goal coach by the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Liu holds a masters of arts in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in Irvine (2016). He resides in Culver City, Calif.
