FULLERTON, Calif. – The Titans didn't get the win they were looking for on Senior Night, but Katelyn Nielsen had herself a night in her final game as a senior, notching a team-best six kills, as Fullerton fell 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 9-15) to No. 22 Cal Poly, Saturday night inside Titan Gym.
Nielsen finished with six kills, but it was Jayla Norman leading the way with a team-best seven kills.
Madeline Schneider match her with six kills and six digs in the match. Defensively it was two seniors leading the way, as Katie Roux dug out a team-best 11 balls from the unfamiliar libero position. Shimen Fayad also came through with 10 digs.
Makenzi Abelman had a team-high 12 assists, while senior Alayne Thompson led Fullerton with two block assists.
The Titans (5-24, 1-15 Big West) came out firing and looking for the upset at the start of this one, as Fullerton raced out to a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs (26-2, 16-0 Big West) started to pull away, but Fullerton bounced back, striking for five straight points to pull within 17-16 in the first set.
The Titans made it an 18-17 contest before Cal Poly pulled away for the 25-18 set victory to take a 1-0 advantage.
However, Fullerton wasn't deterred, as it continued to battle in the second set, but in the end the Mustangs hung on to a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the Titans just ran out of gas, as the Mustangs showed why they hadn't lost in conference all season, closing out the set 25-9 to take the set.
