FULLERTON, Calif. – It was a high-energy match from the very beginning, but Fullerton just couldn't sustain its momentum, as it fell to UC Irvine 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18), Friday evening inside Titan Gym.
Meagan Carlson led the way with a team-best nine kills, while Summer Kerins chipped in with seven. Aniya Henry played well, recording a .500 hitting percentage and a team-best two solo and three assisted blocks.
Cady Francis recorded her fourth double-digit dig match filling in for the injured Savahna Costello at the libero spot. She put up a team-high 17 digs, while Katie Roux followed close behind with 12. Nastassja Bowman contributed with 29 assists.
Fullerton (4-15, 0-9 Big West) proved it was here to battle from the very beginning, battling back multiple times during the opening set, at one point leading UC Irvine (16-2, 4-1 Big West) 14-12. However the Anteaters outhit the Titans 14 kills to 10 to end up capturing the first set 25-18.
With the Titans trailing, they needed a burst of energy and they got it in the second set. Fullerton led by as many has three points early on, but the Anteaters kept things close down the stretch. The Titans never gave up, as they squeaked out a 25-23 second set victory to knot things up at 1-1.
Unfortunately, UC Irvine raced out to an early lead in the third set before taking it 25-15 and a 2-1 lead. The Titans put together their best hitting set of the night with their backs up against the wall in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as the Anteaters closed out the four-set victory with a 25-18 win.
Fullerton is back in action tomorrow at 7 pm PT vs. UC Davis inside Titan Gym.
