Preston Announces Coaching Staff for 2015 Season

FULLERTON - Cal State Fullerton volleyball coach Ashley Preston announced her coaching staff Thursday for the upcoming season.

David Butler, who was added to the coaching staff in 2014, has been promoted to head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2015 season.

"Dave is a great recruiter and goes after players who will help improve the program," Preston said. "He has a wealth of volleyball knowledge and I am really fortunate to have him on staff."

Butler was added to the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff for 2014 after spending the previous year at Long Beach State. Butler was the volunteer assistant coach for the women's volleyball team and the lead assistant coach on the Long Beach State Sand Volleyball coaching staff.

Prior to his time at Long Beach State, Butler worked with the Sports Performance Volleyball Club in Aurora, Ill. beginning in 2003. He worked as an assistant to Rick Butler and the 18 Elite team. He also led a pair of teams to bronze medal finishes at the 18 Open (2012) and 18 Club (2013) AAU National Championships. He also coached four AAU All-Americans and a national high school player of the year.

In 2009, Butler worked briefly at Michigan State as a camp volleyball coach and served as a student assistant coach for women's volleyball at Western Illinois where he helped lead the team to three consecutive conference tournament appearances, the only three in the school's history.

Butler went on to become an assistant coach at Rosary High School in Aurora and helped lead the program to its 10th consecutive regional title.

As a player, Butler was a five-year starter at outside hitter for the Western Illinois Club Volleyball team and was a three-year team captain as well as a player-coach and earned conference player of the year honors. He would graduate in 2009 and earn his Bachelor of Science in kinesiology. Butler currently resides in Orange, Calif.

Junel Jeffries also joins Preston's coaching staff as the second assistant coach. Jeffries served as Preston's assistant for three seasons at Coppin State. She will be working primarily with the setters.

"Junel was a huge part of our success at Coppin State," Preston said. "She understands the game from a setter's perspective and knows how to make them play to the best of their abilities. I couldn't be happier that she's onboard to work not only with our setters here at Fullerton but with all the aspects of the offense."

As an assistant at Coppin State, Jeffries assisted with recruiting and also aided in the program's academic progression which resulted in the team receiving the Coppin State Athletics Department Director's Cup for the team with the highest cumulative grade-point average.

Prior to Coppin State, Jeffries served one year as the head coach at Cheney University in 2008.

As a collegiate athlete, Jeffries had an outstanding career at Morgan State University, spending two years as the starting setter for the Bears where she received Mid-Eastern Athletic All-Conference honors in 2004 and holds the school record for most assists in a match.

Jeffries graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 2008 and is currently finishing her masters of science in international marketing and business administration.

Naseri Tumanuvao rounds out Preston's coaching staff, joining as the volunteer assistant for the 2015 season. Tumanuvao played two seasons on the men's volleyball team at Concordia University in Irvine.

"I'm very excited about Naseri joining our staff. He was a very good player and I know he will be a great coach for Fullerton."

Tumanuvao set the all-time career mark with 636 kills and a .283 hitting percentage in his time at Concordia. He is in the top-five of all the career statistical categories and earned numerous individual awards.
