FULLERTON, Calif. – In the opening day of the Fullerton Invite, Cal State Fullerton swept Grand Canyon to win 6-1. Fullerton moves to 4-1 (1-0) while Grand Canyon falls to 4-5.
The dynamic duo of Karla Portalatin and Sarah Nuno once again showed their power as they took down Rinaldi/Occhipinti 6-4. Titans doubles continued to dominate and secure the doubles point as No. 97 Genevieve Zeidan and Masako Makiba dominated Mokrova/Buhr 6-2.
Jadie Acidera and Danielle Pham took the unfortunate 4-6 loss to Lo Pumo/ Prudhomme.
"We got off to a good start with doubles and carried it onto the singles," said assistant coach Ellie Edles. "We fought hard through the end, and it was a good win for Luxizi, to pull that match out. It was a good result today, and we look to get back at it on Sunday."
Moving to singles play, Sarah Nuno remained triumphant in the No.1 spot as she took down Lo Pumo 6-2, 6-1. Nuno is 11-4 overall and 2-0 at the No.1 spot with a three-game win streak.
No. 97 Genevieve Zeidan kept the Titans lead going at the No. 2 spot, as she beat out Rinaldi 6-3, 6-1. Zeidan recently moved up six spots after previously being placed at No. 103. Zeidan is 14-2 overall.
Karla Portalatin improved to 10-4 as she defeated Mokrova 6-2, 6-1. She is now 3-0 at the No. 3 singles spot.
At the No.5 singles spot, Caisey Lee Emery took down Infantino 6-1, 6-3. The freshman advances to 8-4, and is 4-0 at the No. 5 spot. Emery holds a five-game win streak.
The No. 4 court came to a wrap in the third hour of play as Meng fought Occhipinti to finally win 6-4, 6-7, 10-2.
Makiba fell 7-6, 6-0, 2-10 at the No. 6 spot to Waschuk.
