FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's tennis program welcomes back Alexis Valenzuela to the coaching staff in her first year as a volunteer coach.
"We're thrilled to have Alexis join our coaching staff," said head coach Dianne Matias. Matias went on to say, "She brings a valuable amount of experience and knowledge from playing at such a high level. She sees and understands the game well and is able to relate to the athletes due to her recent collegiate experience. Her work ethic and competitive demeanor continue to benefit our team. We're grateful for her continued dedication to the program."
The 2016-2017 season served as Valenzuela's record-breaking senior year. She went 17-4 overall in singles play, and her 17 dual singles wins are the most for the program since prior to 2001. Her six Big West singles victories are the most for the program since prior to 2001 as well. She went 21-5 in doubles play with partner Camille De Leon. Valenzuela earned Big West Athlete of the Week twice during her senior campaign, Feb. 1 and Mar. 8. Valenzuela boasted a 55-15 record in dual singles matches, including a 17-10 mark in the Big West Conference and a 51-13 career record when playing at the top of the order.
In doubles play, she and partner Camille De Leon were named to the Big West Conference Doubles First Team in 2016 and 2017. The duo is the only Titans doubles team to earn First Team honors more than once.
The Titans kick off their season Jan. 18 against UC San Diego at 1:30 p.m. PT.
