FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team earned a victory in its final Big West Conference match of the regular season at Titan Courts over UC Riverside, 6-1, behind a sweep in doubles play and wins in five-of-six singles matches.
The Titans came out with a familiar look in doubles action on Friday, pairing Megan Sandford with Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela with Danielle Pham in the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively. The strategy worked as the team of Sandford/De Leon beat the Highlander team of Pham/Vaksman, 8-2, and the Titan pair of Valenzuela/Pham crushed UCR's Delay/Truong 8-0.
Emilia Borkowski and Kalika Slevcove kept up their strong play in doubles this season with an impressive 8-5 win over the UC Riverside team of Pattugalan/Hall. Borkowski and Slevcove improve their season doubles record to 13-8, the best mark on the Titan squad this season.
With the doubles point in hand, the Titans entered singles play with the momentum and never let the Highlanders get back into the match. After being swept in their last match at UC Santa Barbara, the Titans bounced back winning five out of the six possible points in singles play.
De Leon defeated Pham in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot while Sandford did the same in the No. 2 position, beating Pattugalan 6-2, 6-2. CSF's Pham went on to beat Dulay for a second time, this time in singles play, 6-4, 3-0 (ret.) after Dulay was not able to finish the match and conceded the victory.
Senior's Jessica Pepa and Slevcove rounded out their senior day's at Titan Courts with victories over UCR's Caroline Hall and Sophie El-Kara 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively.
The Titans finish the 2015 regular season with an overall record of 10-11 including a 2-6 record in Big West Conference action. Fullerton will hit the courts next on Thurs., Apr. 23 at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. for the first round of the Big West Championships.
