RIVERSIDE, Calif. –The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis swept UC Riverside, 7-0, on Friday at Andulka Park as the Titans picked up their first Big West Conference victory of the year.
Fullerton (7-13, 1-6 Big West) will complete the regular season at 10 a.m., Monday hosting Cal Poly at the Titan Tennis Courts.
UC Riverside remains winless on the season at 0-17 overall and 0-6 in league play.
The Titans started the match with a sweep in doubles action to clinch the doubles point. The No. 1 team of Camille De Leon and Morgan McIntosh defeated UC Riverside's Jasmine Almaguer and Courtney Pattugalan, 8-4. The Fullerton pair is 9-9 on the season.
At No. 2 doubles junior Megan Sandford and freshman Alexis Valenzuela edged UCR's Thanh Doan and Tiffany Jue, 8-2 to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Senior Melanie Abella and junior Kalika Slevcove shut out Sophie El-Kara and VJ Ganesan of UC Riverside, 8-0 at No. 3 in the doubles lineup.
In singles action, Valenzuela earned her 15th win of the year as Almaguer retired after dropping the first set, 6-0. Valenzuela, who played at the top of the lineup and is on a 14-match winning streak, has totaled the most singles dual wins for the Titans since 2000.
McIntosh (11-9) needed just two sets to dispatch Pattugalan, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 in the lineup.
De Leon, also a rookie along with Valenzuela, improved to 11-9 on the year with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Jue at No.3 in the lineup.
At No. 4 singles, Slevcove defeated Doan, 6-1, 6-4.
Sandford improved to 6-5 on the year with a 6-3, 6-1 win over El-Kara at No. 5 in the lineup.
Jessica Pepa earned her ninth win of the season by recording a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ganesan.
Following Monday's regular season finale against Cal Poly, the Titans, currently eighth in the Big West standings, will play in the Big West Championships beginning April 24 at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
