Fullerton News & Notes

Cal State Fullerton enters the week coming off a 4-3 loss on the road to UC Davis, but gained a win after the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) found New Mexico State on March 28 had a lineup error which in the end gave the Titans the victory.

Senior Morgan McIntosh and redshirt junior Megan Sanford both picked up single match wins as McIntosh improved to 10-9, while Sanford picked up her first singles win of the year.

Freshman Alexis Valenzuela (14-3), extended her winning streak to 13 matches and improved her dual mark to 14-3 with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Megan Heneghan at the top of the lineup. The native of West Covina, Calif., now has more wins than any Titan singles player dating back to 2001 (the last year stats are available).

In singles dual action, Fullerton sports a record of 51-63 (.447), although the top three spots hold a winning record of 34-23 (.596), while the bottom three positions in the lineup have struggled at 17-40 (.298).

Fellow rookie Camille De Leon boasts a 10-9 record, playing in the No. 3 in the lineup.

In doubles play, the Titans are 24-31 (.436) and a team of Sandford and Valenzuela are 3-0 this season. Fullerton has compiled five losses this season – to Loyola Marymount (Feb. 9), UC Irvine (Feb. 13), UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 23), Georgetown (Mar. 8), and Wyoming (Mar. 21) – due to the loss of the doubles point which proved to be the difference.

Opponents News & Notes

UC Riverside (0-16, 0-5 Big West) enters Friday's match looking for its first win of the season after dropping contests to UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly last week. Cal State Fullerton faced the Highlanders last season on April 18 and the Titans won 6-1 at the Titan Tennis Courts.

Freshman Jasmine Almaguer leads the Highlanders as she has a 7-8 singles record in the No. 1 position for the Highlanders.

Cal Poly (4-9, 1-5 Big West) travels to Fullerton after sweeping UC Riverside 7-0 on April 6. The Mustangs are led by Emily Gibbens (7-5) and Kathryn Webb (6-3) in singles action, while a team of Webb and Mika Padmanabhan are 5-3 in doubles play this season.
