IRVINE, Calif. – Recent graduate Mikaela Francis was awarded the Service and Leadership Award by the Big West Conference.

Six student-athletes earned the inaugural Big West Conference Service and Leadership Award, which honors those who best engage with other student-athletes, and are involved with their campus community and the community surrounding their institution.

Selection of the student-athletes are based on the following criteria and at the discretion of each institution.

• Only one male or female student-athlete recipient per year 
• Student-Athlete must be a participant in a Big West Conference sponsored sport
• Student-athlete must have been academically eligible on their respective team
• Student-Athlete engages consistently in service and leadership activities that impact the campus, community, or regional levels. 
• Student-Athlete makes the most of opportunities presented to them by taking on key roles and is innovative in seeking out meaningful service and leadership opportunities. 

Francis graduated with a bachelor's degree in Human Services this past spring. She served as the President of Student Athlete Advisory Committee for three years (May 2015-May 2018) as well as volunteering for Titan Tales, CareerWise and annual Girls Sport Expo in hometown of Santa Rosa, Calif. She was also a member of school's Dean List from Spring 2013-Spring 2018 and a two-time Big West Academic All-Conference selection. The former Titan first baseman has also been a part of the BOLD Women's Leadership Network which has taken her overseas to Laos, where she taught English and Women's Empowerment classes.

It's Francis' second major accolade this summer after being nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year last month.
