It may seem counter-intuitive, letting your team see you fail or struggle with maintaining a positive balance of your work and family obligations, but for Kelly Ford, the head coach at Cal State Fullerton and Amy Hogue, the head coach at the University of Utah, sharing failure created a deeper bond with their players.
As Hogue said, "student-athletes fail all the time in front of us. When they know about our fears, anxiety and shortcomings, they feel relieved." Ford is quick to echo those sentiments, sharing that her moment of revelation was when she shared the struggle of being a single mom with her team.
"I told them about their influence on my daughter," noted Ford. "Being transparent with the team was liberating – we don't always want to share our shortcomings as parents."
