Titans Fall to UC Riverside in Series Finale

FULLERTON, Calif. – The UC Riverside softball team was led by Alyssa Razo's complete game five-hitter to shutout Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, at Anderson Family Field on Sunday afternoon. UCR captures the overall series with a record of 2-1.

Razo (12-11) tossed 7 innings, fanned three Titans while commanding the circle without issuing a walk. The right-hander made a living in the strike zone, throwing 67 out of 98 total pitches for strikes, keeping the Fullerton batters behind in the count all afternoon.

The 1-2-3 hitters in UCR's lineup delivered most of the damage to capture the series. Dionne Anderson batted 2-for-4 with one run scored from the lead off position. Karina Romero produced a 1-for-4 effort with two runs scored and one RBI, while Ashley Ercolano chipped in a 1-for-4 performance, driving in one RBI and scoring one run.

UCR jumped ahead early as Karina Romero lifted the first pitch she saw and lifted it over the left field fence, her first home run of the season to place the Highlanders in a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.

The Highlanders tallied on another run in the second inning off an RBI double by Kris DeAnda, scoring Shylene Helms, pinch running for Natalie Sanchez who singled to left center to begin the inning.

UC Riverside tacked on three more runs on three hits in the fifth and another insurance run in the sixth with a lead off solo round-tripper by Sommer Wilson.

In the bottom of the opening frame, senior Ariel Tsuchiyama extended her hitting streak to nine consecutive games with a double into left center for the Titans. The senior concluded the day batting 1-for-3.

Transfer Missy Taukeiaho also chipped in a 2-for-3 effort, chalking up her team-high 16th multi-hit game of the season for Fullerton.

Outside of 1-2 hitters Taukeiaho and Tsuchiyama, the rest of the lineup was stifled by Razo, batting a combined 2-for-18 (.111).

Sophomore Jasmine Antunez (9-8) was given the nod in the circle for Fullerton, surrendering three hits and two runs over 2 innings of work, suffering her eighth loss of the season.

Freshman Christina Washington came in for 2 and 2/3 innings of relief, yielding one earned run on four hits while failing to record a strikeout.

Sophomore Monique Wesley also made an appearance from the Titans bullpen, tossing the final 2 and 1/3 innings, fanning one Highlander and surrendering one run on two hits.
