Seven-Run Inning Helps Titans Defeat Matadors

FULLERTON, Calif.Katey Laban and Jasmine Antunez combined to deliver an impressive performance and a seven-run fifth inning for the Cal State Fullerton softball team helped the Titans defeat Cal State Northridge 8-2 in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Family Field.

The win ends the Titans regular season at 28-28 overall and 13-11 in Big West conference, good for a third-place tie with UC Santa Barbara. The Matadors complete their regular season at 25-31 overall and 11-13 in league play.

In her final home game, senior Katey Laban (ND) tossed the first four and 2/3 innings allowing one run off six hits, while issuing two walks. Laban was relieved Antunez (18-14) in the fifth inning with the game tied 1-1. Entering the game with the bases loaded, the Garden Grove, Calif., native struck out CSUN right fielder Crystal Maas to get out of the jam. The freshman right-hander threw the final two and 1/3 innings allowing one run off two hits, while striking out one to earn the win

Mia Pagano (9-9) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs, three earned, on 12 hits, while walking two and striking out three.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Titans broke open the game scoring seven runs in the inning off five hits and two errors by the CSUN defense. To lead off the inning, Carissa Turang tripled and later scored on an Eliza Crawford's sacrifice fly to center. Later in the inning, Ariel Tsuchiyama drove in two runs with a single up the middle scoring seniors Ashley Carter and Tiffany Sheffler. Fullerton would bat through the order in the inning and with her second at bat of the fifth inning Turang crushed the first pitch over the center fielder's head good for her second triple of the inning and adding two more runs to extend the Titan lead to 8-1.

CSUN added one more run in the top of the seventh, but the Titans held on to take the 8-2 victory. Tsuchiyama was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, and in their final games Tiffany Sheffler added an RBI and run and Courtney Snyder scored a run in the fifth inning. Abby Linn added two hits for the Matadors.

Cal State Fullerton will wait to see if it's in the field of 64 tomorrow as the NCAA postseason bracket will be released on ESPNU at 7 p.m. The Titans ended the season winning 13 of their last 15 games.
