Titans Continue to Build Cancer Awareness with Soccer For Hope

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team hosted its second-annual cancer awareness match on Saturday as the Titans continue their commitment to partner with Soccer For Hope and Be The Match.

Soccer for Hope was in attendance at last Saturday's match at the Titan Track Complex to distribute information about the organization's work as the Titans have associated with the non-profit for over 10 years, participating in yearly camps.

Be The Match was also in attendance at the match allowing fans, families, alumni or faculty and staff to voluntarily register as bone marrow donors.

"The Soccer For Hope event was a huge success," head coach Demian Brown said. "The opportunity to support such an outstanding charity is a very special thing. I want to thank the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks for their support of this event as well."

The Titans recorded a 4-1 victory over Northern Arizona in the spring match as Ivy Diego, Sarah Fajnor, Christina Burkenroad and Rebecca Wilson each scored goals.

Prior to Fullerton's game vs. NAU, youth teams from Fullerton Rangers and West Coast Futbol Club U10 and U12 teams took the field.

Soccer For Hope is a non-profit cancer awareness foundation located in Orange County that helps spread cancer awareness. The organization was founded by Oliver & Jamie Wyss in 1998. Oliver is a former professional soccer player and survivor of Aplastic Anemia. The organization has been driven by its goal to raise funds and awareness for children with life-threatening diseases.

Oliver & Jamie's young children, Hudson and Abella, were both diagnosed with very rare, cancerous brain tumors. Since its inception, Soccer For Hope has progressed from an annual local event in Southern California to a nationwide charity that benefits thousands of children and their families.

Fullerton, the 2014 Big West regular season and tournament champion, is currently 3-1-2 during its spring competition season and plays its final game at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Titan Stadium hosting Cal State L.A.

"We have had a great spring so far in regards to developing a culture of continued success," Brown said. "So many of our players have really taken the opportunity to grow during the spring season, and we look forward to closing out the spring with more positives vs. Cal State L.A. on Thursday."
