FULLERTON, Calif. – A trio of Titans scored as the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team remained undefeated in Big West Conference play with a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine on Thursday night at Titan Stadium.
The Titans (5-7-4, 3-0-2 Big West) remain in fourth place in the league standings with 11 points, but have three regular season matches remaining.
Instead of scoring the goal, junior Rebecca Wilson provided the set up as Fullerton took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The Placentia, Calif., native maintained possession for the Titans at the top of the penalty box on the right side, and sent a cross to senior Brianna Chapman who was wide open. The San Diego native recorded her first goal of the year, placing her attempt to the low far post past a diving Corey Tobin.
The Titans doubled their lead in the 23rd minute as a loose ball in the box was collected by Connie Caliz, and the freshman calmly collected possession and drilled a shot to the low right corner, again beating Tobin.
UC Irvine (5-8-3, 1-3-1 Big West) was able to cut Fullerton's lead in half, 2-1, in the 25th minute as UCI leading goal scorer Lauara McGrail was wide open in the goal box, and turned a shot past Fullerton goalkeeper Jennifer Stuart after Cami Privett had sent in a cross off Clarissa Robles' throw-in.
But Wilson, Fullerton's leading goal scorer, brought the Titans some insurance with a goal in the 48th minute after a pass out of the midfield from Christina Burkenroad left the speedy forward one-one-one with a UCI defender. Wilson was able to chip her shot over Tobin from 15 yards out to score her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Cal State Fullerton held a slim 10-8 edge in shots, and three of the four shots placed on goal found the back of the net with Wilson also hitting the crossbar in the second half.
The Titans return to action on Sunday hosting UC Riverside at Titan Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
