FULLERTON, Calif. - Eighth-year Cal State Fullerton head women's soccer coach Demian Brown signed a three-year contract extension through the 2016 season, it was announced by Athletic Director Jim Donovan on Friday.
"For the last 10 years, Demian has worked to steer our women's soccer program toward a tremendous amount of success including winning Big West championships and advancing to the NCAA Tournament," Donovan said. "I believe under Demian's leadership that the program will continue to produce remarkable achievements on and off the field."
Brown, who started his career with Fullerton as an assistant in 2004, most recently led the Titans to their fourth Big West Tournament title as well as their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013 following an 8-7-7 campaign.
"First, I would like to thank Jim Donovan and the entire administration for their support and confidence," Brown said. "I take great pride in being a Titan, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead the program in the upcoming seasons."
In seven years (2007-13) at the helm of the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer program, Brown has totaled a 58-64-19 record as well as a 28-25-4 mark in Big West play.
During Brown's tenure, the Titans have won two Big West regular season championships (2007, 2012), two Big West Tournament titles (2007, 2013) while making two NCAA Tournament appearances (2007, 2013).
"I am very excited for the future of the program," Brown said. "We have a tremendous group of returners and an outstanding recruiting class that will be announced very soon. I look forward to continuing to compete for conference championships and NCAA tournament success."
Brown was also named Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2012, and he has directed Cal State Fullerton to four winning seasons during seven years, including three straight (2011-13).
Hired as only the third head coach in the history of the program in February of 2007, Brown's Division I head coaching debut was nothing short of stellar, becoming the first-ever, first-year, first-time head coach in the history of the conference to lead his team to both the league's regular season and tournament titles and only the second first-year head coach to win a regular season title.
While at Fullerton, Brown has tutored some of the Big West Conference's best defensive players as the Titans have had three Big West Defensive Players of the Year in All-American Marlene Sandoval (2005), Erica Janke (2006), and Jenae Gibbens (2007). Most recently, Erica Mazeau was named the 2013 Big West Midfielder of the Year and Lindsey Maricic was named the 2013 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year.
In addition, 19 different players have earned 26 first-team all-conference honors with 23 more named to the All-Big West second and honorable mention teams.
Brown originally joined the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff as an assistant for the 2004 campaign and served in that capacity for three years. In 10 years total on the Fullerton coaching staff, Brown has totaled a record of 100-84-22 as well as four Big West regular season titles (2004, 2005, 2007, 2012), four Big West Tournament titles (2005, 2006, 2007, 2013) and four NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007, 2013).
Since joining the Titans, Brown has had a tremendous impact on the defensive side of the ball, helping coach the Titan defense to a pair of record-setting seasons. Under his direction in 2004, Fullerton set single-season records for shutouts (8) and fewest shots allowed (183).
Brown and the Titans improved on that effort in 2005, setting new marks for fewest goals allowed (15), fewest shots allowed (161) and shutouts (12) while also tying the record for consecutive shutouts in a single season with four.
Brown came to Cal State Fullerton after spending five years as an assistant coach for the men's program at UC Irvine, helping lead the Anteaters to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in 2000 and coaching the 2001 Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year (Saul Wolf).
A 1997 graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a degree in communications, Brown was a four-year letter winner for former Head Coach Al Mistri as a defender for the Titans from 1992-94 and 1996, helping Fullerton to the semifinals of the 1993 College Cup.
He was selected to the 1993 NCAA All-Tournament Team and was a two-time All-MPSF selection, finishing his career with four goals and three assists.
