Edberg Climbs Into Top Ten as Titans Sit in Sixth

EL MACERO, Calif. - Sophomore Martina Edberg climbed into the top 10 of the individual standings Monday and Cal State Fullerton moved up a spot in the team standings after the second round at the Big West Conference Championships hosted by UC Davis at El Macero Country Club in El Macero, Calif.

Edberg entered the day in a tie for 18th place after posting a 4-over par in the first round but the defending conference individual champion shot an even-par 72 on Monday to climb eight spots and sit in 10th place going into the final day of play. Edberg has carded a collective 4-over 148 through two rounds after posting four birdies through the first two rounds. She is tied for third in the tournament with 26 pars after 36 holes. Edberg sits nine strokes back of leader Andrea Wong of UC Davis after Wong surged to the top of the leaderboard with a 4-under 68 on Monday. She sits at 5-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Hawai'i's Raquel Ek and two shots ahead of Savannah Vilaubi of UC Riverside. Day one leader and Wong's teammate Blair Lewis dropped to fourth place, sitting a 1-under for the tournament.

As for the Titans, the team improved their score from day one after posting a collective 11-over 299 in the second round. The Titans currently sit in sixth place with a 36-over 612 after 36 holes. They along with everyone else trail five-time defending conference champion UC Davis after the Aggies posted a 7-under 281 in round two after shooting an even-par round on Sunday. The Aggies' score of 7-under leads second-place Hawai'i by 12 strokes heading into the final day of play.

Along with Edberg, Nadine Rivera also climbed up the leaderboard on Monday for the Titans after she also posted an even-par 72 in the second round. Rivera posted seven birdies on the day, putting her in a tie for second amongst the field in that category for the tournament.

Rivera is currently tied for 23rd place along with teammate Brittany Farrell after the freshman posted a 4-over 76 on Monday. Farrell is at a 10-over 154 through 36 holes and currently leads the field with 27 pars in two days.

Makayla Mier shot a 7-over 79 on Monday and sits in a tie for 30th place with a 13-over 157 for the tournament while Tisha Alyn Abrea rounded out the Titans scoring after posting a 17-over 89.

The Titans will return to the links Monday at 9 a.m. to wrap up the Big West Conference championships and the 2014-15 regular season.
