Alyn Abrea, Edberg Amongst Leaders After First Round at Big West Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Junior Tisha Alyn Abrea and freshman Martina Edberg are amongst the leaders after the opening round of the Big West Championships hosted by Cal Poly at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

 

Alyn Abrea and Edberg each shot an even-par 73 on day one, placing the two Titans in a tie for second place overall after 18 holes along with Chaewon Park of Long Beach State. They all trail UC Davis' Bev Vatananugulkit, who finished the first day with a 1-under 72. Seven players are tied for fifth with a 1-over 74.

 

In the team standings, the Titans find themselves in fifth place after the first day, shooting a collective 16-over 308. They are within four shots of second-place Long Beach State and trail day-one leader UC Davis by 14 strokes.

 

Alyn Abrea collected four birdies to offset four bogeys on the day to help pace the Titans to a fifth place standing after Sunday's first round. Edberg tallied two birdies to negate her two bogeys on the day, shooting par on the other 14 holes.

 

Makayla Mier finished the day with an 8-over 81 for the Titans, placing her in a tie for 26th place overall. Joining her there is teammate Dakota Brown, who also shot an 81 on Sunday.

 

Rounding out the Titans scoring was Nadine Rivera, who posted a 16-over 89 to put her in 39th place.

 

The Titans will return to the course for round two on Monday as the teams tee off starting at 9 a.m., with Rivera the first Titan scheduled to get underway at 9:40 a.m. Edberg and Alyn Abrea are scheduled to tee off at 10:20 and 10:10 a.m. respectively.
