Titans Set to Conclude Season at Big West Championships

THIS WEEK: Cal State Fullerton will conclude the 2013-14 regular season as they travel to the Big West Championships hosted by Cal Poly at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club in San Luis Obispo Calif. starting Sunday, April 13.

 

THE COURSE: The Big West Championships will be held at the 6,196-yard, par-73 San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club. The course features five par-5's, nine par-4's and four par-3's. The three-day, 54-hole event will start at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday with the second round slated for a 9 a.m. start and the final day getting started again at 7:30 a.m.

 

THE FIELD: Along with the Titans, the seven other teams in the Big West Conference will take part in the championships including host Cal Poly, UC Davis, UC Riverside, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i.

 

IN THE POLLS: The Titans enter the final event of the regular season ranked No. 88 in the GolfStat NCAA head-to-head rankings released April 9. They are one of four teams ranked in the top-100 includig UC Davis (No. 37), Long Beach State (No. 75), UC Irvine (No. 80).

LAST TIME OUT: The Titans finished in a tie for third place at The Gold Rush hosted by Long Beach State. The competition served as a bit of a tune up for this week's conference championships as six of the eight teams in the Big West participated in the event.

 

The Titans had three golfers rack up a top-20 finish at The Gold Rush, led by Tisha Alyn Abrea. The junior from Murrieta shot a 4-over 76 in the third round to finish the competition at 7-over, shooting a 223 over the three rounds. Abrea finished in sixth place overall, eight strokes behind Gonzaga's Alice Kim, who took earned medalist honors with a 1-under 215.

 
 

Martina Edberg finished the final round with a 4-over 76 to put her overall score at a 9-over 225 for the competition, finishing 10 shots off the lead. It was Edberg's sixth top-20 finish in her rookie season and her fourth top-10 finish.

 
 

Makayla Mier recorded the best final round of any Titans golfer, posting a 3-over 75 on Tuesday. Mier finished the competition with a 12-over 228, tied for 11th place. It was her second top-20 finish of the season, both coming in the spring portion of the schedule.

 
 

Dakota Brown posted a 7-over 79 on Tuesday to finish with a 21-over 237 for the competition, placing her in a tie for 30th. Nadine Rivera rounded out the scoring for the Titans as she shot a 8-over 80 in the final round and scored a 30-over 246 in her second competition of the season.

 

TITANS AT THE BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: Since the women's golf program was reinstated in 2009-10, Cal State Fullerton has never finished better than third at the Big West Championships. They finished seventh the first two years and then placed third in the 2011-12 season. Last year they placed fifth overall, led by Tisha Alyn Abrea's 10-over 229, the best mark by a Titans golfer at the championships.
