Titans Head to San Jose for Juli Inkster Spartan Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. --

 

THIS WEEK: The Cal State Fullerton women's golf team will participate in their second competition of the spring season when they head to the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational hosted by San Jose State University on Monday, March 3.

 

THE COURSE: This week's event will be held at the 6,162-yard, par-72 Almaden Golf Course and Country Club in San Jose, Calif. Play begins Monday morning with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts and 36-holes scheduled on the first day. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with another shotgun start scheduled.

 

THE FIELD: In addition to the Titans and host San Jose State, 11 other universities will participate in the Spartan Classic, including Titans fellow Big West team UC Davis. The rest of the field includes Boise State, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Portland State, San Francisco and Santa Clara.

 

IN THE POLLS: The Titans enter the tournament ranked No. 84 in the nation according to the Feb. 26 GolfStat NCAA head-to-head rankings. This week's field features nine teams ranked in the top 100 and two teams in the top-35, led by Oregon (No. 20) and UC Davis (No. 35). The rest of the teams in the top-100 include New Mexico (No. 67), San Jose State (No. 77), Portland State (No. 82), San Francisco (No. 89), Coastal Carolina (No. 92) and Nevada (No. 95).

LAST TIME OUT: The Titans began the spring portion of their 2013-14 season with a fifth place finish at the Jim West Invitational at Bandit Golf Course hosted by Texas State University in New Braunfels, TX.

 

Tisha Alyn Abrea and Seri Lee each finished in a tie for 12th place, shooting a 16-over 229 for the competition. Lee's finish marked her best result of the season, surpassing her 13th place showing at the Cowgirl Desert Invitational in October. 

 

Makayla Mier, who had the best round of any Titans golfer with a 3-over 74 in round one, finished in a tie for 16th place overall after shooting a 230 for the competition. She shot a 7-over 78 in round three, matching her second round performance.

 

Martina Edberg placed in a tie for 20th overall after her 6-over 77 in Tuesday's final round put her at 232 for the competition while Dakota Brown saved her best round for last, shooting a 6-over 77 in round three.

CALIFORNIA GIRLS: After taking part in four tournaments outside the state in the 2013-14 season, the Titans final four competitions of the spring will all take place in the state of California, concluding with the Big West Championships in San Luis Obispo on April 13.

--Tisha Alyn Abrea and Seri Lee are the only two Titans since the sport was reinstated to have competed in every possible tournament for Cal State Fullerton for their careers (23-for-23)…

 

--Fullerton's fifth-place finish at the Jim West Invitational marked the 11th time in its last 14 events that the Titans have finished in the top five dating back to last season…

 

--Abrea finished with the best 36-hole tournament score since reinstatement with her 2-over-par 146 at the Rose City Collegiate on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 while the Titans, as a team, shot a school-record 609 over 36 holes at the rain-shortened event…

 

--Fullerton's first-place finish in Palm Desert was its best since finishing second at its own Folino Invitational on Feb. 17-19 last season. It was also Fullerton's first victory since the Rose City Collegiate on Oct. 1-2 during the 2012-13 season and the fifth victory for the program since it was reinstated during the 2009-10 season.
