Smith Named Big West Honorable Mention

IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomore Daeja Smith was named Big West Conference Honorable Mention, earning her first career conference award it was announced by the league office on Monday.

 

Smith averaged 11.3 points per game to go along with a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per game. She improved her scoring average slightly, pouring in 11.7 points per game in Big West Conference games.

 

Smith's .491 shooting percentage (112-of-228) ranked fifth in the Big West, as did her 7.0 boards per game, in addition, she averaged a team-leading 1.4 blocks per game (third in the Big West) and 3.0 offensive rebounds per game (second in the Big West).

 

The native of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., had a breakout season after missing the 2015-16 campaign with a knee injury.

 

She capped the year with back-to-back 21-point performances in losses on the road at Cal Poly on Wednesday and UC Irvine on Saturday, setting a new career scoring high.  She totaled 19 double-figure scoring games, seven double-figure rebounding games and six double-doubles during the year.

 

Smith also led the team in scoring on seven occasions and led the team in rebounding a team-best 15 times.

 

In addition to recording a new scoring high during the year, she also knocked down her first two career three-pointers, grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds vs. Whittier on Nov. 28, 2016, dished a career-high four assists against San Diego State on Dec. 22, 2016, and blocked a career-high four shots vs. Columbia on Dec. 29, 2016.

 

The Titans have received 42 Big West all-conference honors, including first team, second team and honorable mention, dating back to 1986.

 

Cal State Fullerton completed the 2016-17 season with a 4-25 overall record and a 1-15 mark in the Big West Conference. The Titans finished ninth in the Big West standings and did not advance to the Big West Tournament.


CSUN's Channon Fluker was named the 2016-17 Big West Conference Player of the Year, while CSUN's Eliza Mathews was voted Freshman of the Year. Jennifer Gross, who led UC Davis to the regular season title, was voted the 2016-17 Big West Coach of the Year. 

Long Beach State swept Sixth Player (Raven Benton), Defensive Player (Jewelyn Sawyer) and Hustle Player (Anna Kim) of the Year awards.
