FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team stayed with defending Big West Champions CSUN until fading late in the game and losing 65-53 on Thursday night at Titan Gym behind Ashlee Guay's 15-point, 7-rebound, 9-assist performance.

Guay missed a rare triple double by just one assist and three rebounds, seemingly willing her team at the time they needed it most to escape Titan Gym with the win.  The defending Big West Player of the Year shot 5-of-12 from the field and drained 2-of-5 from deep while playing all but one minute of the contest.

Kathleen Iwuoha paced the Titan offense on Thursday, pouring in 21 points while adding five rebounds and four assists.  The senior forward scored more than 20 points for the third time this season after scoring 24 twice, the most recent occasion on Dec. 3 at Denver.

It took some time for the offenses to get into the flow of the game as both the Titans and Matadors came out with full-court press defense to begin the game.  Through the first media timeout of the game the score was 3-3.  The time to regroup was exactly what CSUN needed as the Matadors went on a 14-2 run, with a Guay three-point shot as the exclamation point at the end.

The Titans would not back down, however, as Chante Miles capped off a 7-0 run of their own to bring Fullerton back to within striking distance at 20-15 with 05:29 left to play in the half.

Frantic back and forth action continued the rest of the half as the Matadors extended their lead and went into the halftime break ahead of the Titans 36-25.  CSUN shot 44 percent (13-of-29) from the field and 43 percent (9-of-21) from behind the arc.  The Titans shot a blistering 50 percent (9-of-18) from the field and matched that mark from behind the arc, hitting 1-of-2.

Kathleen Iwuoha was the only Titan in double figures at the end of one half of play, scoring 10 points on 5-of-8 from the field.  In the full 20 minutes on the floor, Iwuoha also pulled down two rebounds and dished out two assists.  Emily Cole was the Matadors leading scoring after one half, scoring nine points on 3-of-6 from three-point range.

The Titans came back to the floor in the second half with a clear plan to feed the hot hand in Iwuoha for the rest of the game.  The senior from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. responded with 11 points in the second half to add to her 10 points from the first half.

Three Matadors finished the evening in double figures with Guay dominating the late minutes of the game and finishing tied for the team high in points with 15.  Emily Cole was the other Matador with 15 points and Cinnamon Lister added 10 points to add to the cause.

Iwuoha's strong play led to an advantage in the paint as the Titans doubled up the Matadors down low 24-12 in the game.  CSUN evened out that advantage with points off turnovers, however, outpacing Fullerton in that category 23-19.  The Matadors second unit also dominated the Titan bench, outscoring CSF 30-0 in the game.

The Titans shot 48 percent (20-of-42) from the field and 33 percent (4-of-12) while falling to 10-16 overall and 4-9 in Big West Conference play.  CSUN (19-9, 9-5) wins its sixth-straight conference tilt, shooting 37 percent (22-of-59) from the field and 38 percent (15-of-39) from three-point range.

The Titans are back at Titan Gym on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. to take on Southern California rival Long Beach State.
