Women’s Basketball Mid-Season Update

Women’s Basketball Mid-Season Update

FULLERTON, Calif. -   Head women's basketball coach Daron Park sat down with FullertonTitans.com to update fans on how the season has gone halfway through his second year at the helm of the Titans program.

Fullerton has an overall record of 8-8 halfway through the 2014-15 season, and won its opening game of Big West Conference play on Jan. 8, a 58-49 victory over UC Riverside.

FullertonTitans.com – "Give us some insight on how the season has progressed so far, and how the non-conference schedule has prepared your team for conference play."

Daron Park
– "Looking back, I think we left a couple wins out there. It's human nature to want to be better than you are, but with that being said when you take a look at our program and our schedule we are very pleased with where we are at. We're pleased that we continue to grow, develop and improve each week.  To start the season 0-3 and to be 8-8 a couple games past the halfway point of the year is exciting.  We're starting to play some really good basketball and most importantly understanding what we need to do to play competitive basketball at a high level.

FullertonTitans.com – "Chante Miles is having a senior season to remember, talk a little bit about what she has meant for this team on the court."

Daron Park – " Chante has earned everything that she is getting.  From day one when I took the reigns of this program she bought in and hung on every word we said.  She really made an effort to listen to our way of teaching, embrace our style of play, and understand that it would pay huge dividends in the end.  She's playing in control with amazing confidence and the game has really slowed down for her.  We're so excited that she's playing at this level, obviously, and we're excited to challenge her to continue to get better as we develop her not only for this year but life after college basketball.  She's been critical for our success and we're hoping to continue the trend."

FullertonTitans.com – "Senior leadership plays a big role for your team on and off the court, from your perspective what has this senior class (Miles, Tailer Butler, Kathleen Iwuoha & Natalie Williams) done to show the underclassmen how to be a Titan?"

Daron Park – " I think this senior class really embraced the live-by-example philosophy.  They may not be the most vocal kids, but they've all been through the fires with us now, and understand what I expect in our program.  Everything we do has purpose and meaning and our seniors are doing a tremendous job of making sure the freshman understand that."

FullertonTitans.com – "All of the new faces this year have contributed heavily on the court, talk about what Daeja Smith, Portia Neale, Amanda Tivenius and Dhanyel Johnson have brought to your program."

Daron Park – "We recruited these kids to come in and help our program right away, and they have helped us in countless ways on the court and off.  They are high character individuals, good students, and great kids who came in with a hunger and desire to compete.  They push our upperclassmen in practice, provide valuable minutes in critical times during games, and we're just so happy they chose to be apart of the Titan family."

FullertonTitans.com – "Now that conference play is underway, and your first home win is under your belt, give us some insight on what you and your staff are looking to improve on moving forward."

Daron Park – " We're always looking forward to improving defensive consistency.  I thought in our first conference home game against UC Riverside we were sensational defensively for the first 20 minutes, and for whatever reason we weren't as good in the final 20 minutes.  We want to always be striving for perfection, our goal is to play the perfect basketball game on offense and defense, but we're still far from it.  So with every waking minute we're looking at how to challenge our kids to be more disciplined defensively, and be sharper offensively, and someday put ourselves in position to play that perfect basketball game."

FullertonTitans.com – "Coming up on a two-game conference home stand, talk about what the Titan fans have meant to your team as attendance at Titan Gym continues to grow each home game."

Daron Park – "You have no idea how amazing our team feels when there are people in the stands. The students and other athletic teams that show up to be apart of "The Stampede" help fan the fire that we've lit under this team.  There are a lot of people who have supported Titan women's basketball for a long time through the good and the bad, and we feel we're un the upswing again.  So we're desperately inviting all those fans to come give us a chance and watch us play.  You're going to see a fun, energetic style of basketball and we're going to represent CSF basketball in an amazing way.  We will make all you very proud that you chose to support our program."

The Titans are back at Titan Gym for a two-game home stand against Cal Poly on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
