FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team could not overcome a slow first half as they lost to Albany, 71-49, Sunday afternoon at Titan Gym behind a game-high 18 points from Zakiya Saunders and 14 points from Imani Tate.

The Titans (4-7) were led by Chante Miles who poured in 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, while adding team-high seven assists in her 40 minutes on the floor. Miles has now scored in double figures for nine-straight games, tying a career-high mark she set last season from Nov. 8 to Dec. 14, 2013.

Senior Kathleen Iwuoha was the only other Titan in double figures on Sunday, scoring 10 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Iwuoha did all she could to give Fullerton second chances as she pulled down five offensive rebounds in the game, falling just one rebound short of posting her third double-double of the season.

Despite the hot-shooting numbers for Albany on Sunday, both defenses stood out in the early going as the two teams combined for five turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game.  The defensive efforts of both teams kept the score close until Albany sunk five unanswered field goals, starting a 17-3 run that left the Titans trailing 28-13 with 7:08 left in the opening frame.  The Titans and Great Danes traded baskets for the remainder of the half as Albany took a 43-28 lead into the break.

Saunders led the way for the Great Danes with 10 points at the break on 5-of-7 shooting from the field as Iwuoha directed the Titan offense with 10 points of her own on 4-of-6 from the field.

Albany (7-4) did not take its foot off the accelerator in the second half, shooting 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the field, slowly increasing its lead as Fullerton could only manage to shoot 27.6 percent (8-of-29) from the field the rest of the way.

"I'm disappointed in the way started the game today," head coach Daron Park said.  "Albany was an NCAA Tournament team last season and they've won their conference for the past few years in a row.  We knew they were big, athletic, and physical so we talked with our team about matching that physicality and challenged them to bring that to the court tonight, but we couldn't get it done.  To beat good teams we have to match that style of play and we didn't do it.  I thought we did it much better in the second half, but unfortunately it was a really big hole to try to dig ourselves out of.  We'll have to shake this one off and get ready to play UMKC next week."

Albany finished with three scorers in double figures as its leading scorer so far this season, Shereesha Richards, contributed 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.  Saunders and Tate had efficient-shooting games as well, finishing 8-of-10 and 6-of-8 from the field, respectively.

The Great Danes shot a red-hot 56.6 percent from the field overall, including a 62.5 percent clip in the first half.  The Titans shot 34.6 percent for the game and coughed up the ball 21 times that led to 23 Albany points off turnovers.

The Titans will take a week off to enjoy the holiday season, but are back in action at Titan Gym on Dec. 31 at 1:00 p.m. to ring in the New Year against the University of Missouri, Kansas-City.
