Assessing the Aggies

UC Davis (10-12, 5-4 Big West) comes into this week right in the middle of the conference standings. The Aggies outlasted the Titans in overtime the last time the two teams competed, 69-67, on  Jan. 18. UCD has won two of its past three games (UCSB, CSUN).

The Aggies are led by junior forward Sydnee Fipps, as she ranks third in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game, while also grabbing 6.0 rebounds per contest. Kelsey Harris also helps the Aggies out as she averages 11.5 points per contest, while Alyson Doherty chips in with 12.2 points a game and 6.2 boards a game.

UC Davis averages 67.9 points per game, while they give up 70.0...UC Davis leads the league in three-pointers made and free throw percentage...the Aggies were picked to finish sixth in the Big West's preseason conference poll.

Scouting the Rainbow Wahine

Cal State Northridge enters the contest with a 11-10 overall record (5-4 Big West) and like UC Davis is in a four-way tie for third place. After starting 4-1 in Big West play the Wahine have dropped three of its last four games.

The Rainbow Wahine boast three players averaging double-figures in points Kamilah Jackson (15.6 ppg), Ashleigh Karaitiana (10.8 ppg), and Shawna Lei-Kuehu (10.4 ppg). Jackson, a former Big West player of the week, also leads the team in rebounds as she averages 9.5 per game.

Hawai'i averages 66.5 points per game, while it allows a league low 64.7 per contest. UH leads the Big West in multiple defensive categories (scoring margin, scoring defense, rebounding defense, field goal percentage defense). The Wahine are shooting 39.5 percent from the field and 31.2 percent from behind the arc.

Conference Call

The Titans are 198-300 (.396) all-time against Big West Conference foes. Fullerton was 7-14 last season against league foes and won two games in the conference tournament before losing to Pacific in the semifinals.

Last Time Out for the Titans

Ashlee Guay poured in 26 points and Cinnamon Lister chipped in 16 points, as Cal State Northridge shot 49 percent for the game and raced past Cal State Fullerton, 76-54 Saturday night at Titan Gym.

Playing in their annual pink game and teaming up with the "Play4Kay" Foundation, Fullerton moves to 8-13 overall and 4-4 in Big West play. The Titans were led by senior guard Alex Thomas as she scored 14 points while Kathleen Iwuoha added nine points. Freshman Samantha Logan chipped in five points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Cal State Northridge improves to 11-13 on the year and 7-3 in the Big West behind Guay's performance. Along with Lister's 16-point performance, Camille Mahlknecht also added eight points and 14 rebounds in the win.

The Titans and Matadors each came out of the game trading baskets, but at the 12-minute media timeout Northridge held a 21-12 advantage. Over the next five minutes a 11-3 run by Fullerton tied the game up at 21 with just over eight remaining in the half.

However, the Matadors quickly answered back and a 6-0 run with under three minutes left to play in the first stanza pushed CSUN ahead 35-28. As the half came dwindling down to the end the Matadors headed into halftime leading 42-33 after shooting an impressive 45.5 percent from the field.

CSUN was able to use its height to its advantage and outscored the Titans in the paint 24-2 in the first half. Despite not having an answer in the key, the Titans only trailed by nine after 11 first-half points from Thomas.

After intermission, CSUN continued to hold its lead and gained a 15-point lead six minutes into the second half. The Matadors continued their hot shooting as 53.8 second-half percentage gave them their largest lead of 28. Northridge would finish the game outscoring the Titans 40-10 in the paint and scored 18 points off turnovers. Fullerton finished the ball game shooting 28.6 percent from the floor.

Last Time Against UC Davis

The Titans and Aggies meet again for the second time this season on Thursday. UC Davis won the first meeting almost a month ago at Titan Gym in overtime, 69-67. Alex Thomas scored led the Titan with 23 points, while Chante Miles and Kathleen Iwuoha both added 11 in the loss.

The Titans rank second in free-throw percentage (.728) and turnover margin (+1.38). Fullerton is third in rebounding defense (37.4 rpg).

Last Time Winning in Paradise

The Titans head to Hawai'i for the second time since the Rainbow Wahine returned to the Big West last season. Fullerton defeated Hawai'i twice on the mainland last season, but the Titans haven't won in Honolulu since January 13, 1995 when CSF won 75-69.

Defeating the Highlanders Twice

After defeating UC Riverside for the second time last week that marks the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Titans beat the Highlanders in both regular season contests.

Hawai'i Coach with a Fullerton Connection

This weekend Hawai'i assistant coach Wendy Anae will go up against her alma mater, Cal State Fullerton. Anae played at CSF from 1985-1988 under head coach Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah and averaged 8.4 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game in her career.

The Amazing Alex

After averaging 8.6 points in non-conference games, senior guard Alex Thomas has stepped up her game as the Mission Viejo, Calif., native is averaging 19.5 points per game in conference games, which is second among Big West players. She is also second in minutes played (38.4), and seventh in three-pointers per game (2.13). Thomas also scored a career high 24 points in a 60-57 win last weekend versus UC Riverside.

Butler's Hot Streak from Behind the Arc

Junior guard Tailer Butler has been a big contributor off the bench for the Titans since the start of Big West play. The Los Angeles, Calif., native has converted 26 three-pointers in eight conference games. Butler ranks first amongst Big West players for three-pointers made per game (3.25) and needs 22 points to record 400 points in her career.

Living Pretty in the 60's

The Titans are 7-4 when scoring 60+ points this season, compared to a 1-9 mark when scoring under 60 points...Fullerton is 3-0 when scoring at least 70 points this season.

The Titans are 5-1 when shooting better than 40 percent from the field and 4-0 when shooting better than 40 percent from behind the arc.

Out-Rebounding the Opponents

The Titans are 6-1 when grabbing more rebounds than the opponents. However, when Fullerton doesnt grab more rebounds than their opponent they are 2-10.

Williams' Block Party

Junior forward Natalie Williams leads the Titans with 13 blocked shots this season and now ranks ninth all-time among career shot blockers. The Cerritos, Calif., native needs one block to tie Charlee Underwood who played from 2003-2007.

Looking to Reach Career Rebounds Mark

Kathleen Iwuoha, who leads the team in rebounding, needs just four rebounds to record 400 total rebounds in her career. Redshirt-sophomore Hailey King needs just two to reach 200 total rebounds in her career, while Chante Miles needs six boards to also reach 200.

Sharing the Hot Hand

Chante Miles led the Titans in scoring in seven of the first 12 games to start the season, but Alex Thomas has had a team high in scoring the last seven games. Miles and Thomas are the only Titans to have back-to-back games as the leading scorer for the team.

Up Next

Fullerton will come home following this two-game road trip to face league leader Cal Poly (Feb. 20) and UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 22).

Most Three-Attempts

The Titans shot a whopping 41 three-pointers versus Long Beach State on Feb. 1, which gives Fullerton a new school record for most three-pointer attempts in a single game. The Titans previously shot 40 treys against Iowa State (12/8/13) earlier this season.

Miles Dishing Out Assists

Over halfway through the season junior guard Chante Miles is second in the Big West in assists. The Compton, Calif., native has 93 assists this season and tied a career high against UCSB after dishing out eight assists. Miles previously had eight assists versus Alabama earlier this season.

UCSB Winning Streak at Home Snapped

Fullerton's win last weekend at UCSB signified the end of what was a 23-year losing streak in Santa Barbara. The Titans previously defeated the Gauchos at the Thunderdome on Feb. 12, 1991 (22 games).

All About Getting Better

Fullerton finished 5-13 in the Big West last season. The Titans already have four conference wins with still eight league games to play.

Miles Ahead of the Rest

Chante Miles has averaged 13.4 points per game, which leads all Titan players. Miles set a new career high after scoring 22 points against New Mexico State on Dec. 23. The Compton, Calif., native has had double-digit scoring figures in 17 of 21 games this season and has 37 total in her career. Last season the junior guard had 19 double-digit scoring games.

Individuals in the Big West

Career Milestones Reached

Senior guard Brianna Barfield reached the 200 total point plateau last weekend versus Cal State Northridge.

The Second Half, Times Two

Fullerton has scored 53.7 percent (690/1283) of its total points this season in the second half. If one were to replace Fullerton's first half scoring with its second half scoring this season, the Titans would be averaging 65.8 points per game compared to its current 61.1 points per game clip.

California Dreamin'

All 13 players on the roster call California home and all are natives of Southern California.

Flying Under the Radar

Samantha Logan is making her presence felt. She currently is second on the team in overall rebounding (6.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding (4.24 rpg). Her overall rebounding per game ranks 11th best in the Big West.

Finding the Right Mix

Cal State Fullerton has used six different starting lineups this season and is 7-6 with a lineup of Chante Miles, Hailey King, Alex Thomas, Samantha Logan, and Kat Iwuoha. Hailey King and Alex Thomas are the only Titans to have started in every game this season.

From the Charity Stripe

In the final moments of the game on Jan. 3 versus Denver, the Titans knocked down multiple clutch free throws and made 19 total (19-23) in the game. The 19 free throws ties a season high this season. (Arizona State, 12/14). Alex Thomas went a perfect 8-for-8 from the line in the win and set a new career high for free throws in a game. Thomas previously had converted a high of seven in three separate contests with the last time coming against Columbia on Nov. 22.

Double-Double

Samantha Logan recorded her first career double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) on Nov. 29 versus Toledo and was the first Titan since Kathleen Iwuoha had 15 points and 13 rebounds against Pacific on March 15, 2013 to earn a double-double. However, the Corona, Calif., native came back the next day to record another double-double versus Alabama (19 points, 11 rebounds). Also, Logan was just one point shy of posting a double-double against Columbia on Nov. 22 (9 points, 10 rebounds). Fullerton had four double-doubles during the 2012-13 season.

Versus the Top 25

Iowa State was the first nationally ranked opponent for the Cal State Fullerton women's basketball program since the Titans played Gonzaga on Dec. 2, 2011 when the 24th ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated Fullerton 73-60 at Titan Gym. Last season the Titans played three teams (Georgetown, Gonzaga, Pacific) that received votes in either the AP or USA Today Coaches Poll.

Fullerton has lost its last 14 consecutive games against teams either ranked or receiving votes in either poll dating back to a 68-65 win over Idaho (receiving votes in the Associated Press poll) on Jan. 24, 2004, in Moscow, Idaho... the Titans have lost their last 25 meetings with top 25 foes since posting a 75-63 victory over No. 24 (Associated Press) Long Beach State on Jan. 21, 1991. Overall, Fullerton is 11-95 against nationally ranked competition dating to the 1977 season... the Titans have not been listed among the top 25 since Feb. 4, 1991, breaking into the Associated Press poll at No. 24 that week.

The Titans welcome two new faces, Samantha Logan and Chelsea Waddy to the squad for the 2013-14 season.
