IRVINE, Calif. – After making its third consecutive conference finals appearance in 2016, Cal State Fullerton men's soccer has been chosen to finish second in the Big West South Division, the conference announced Wednesday.
Fullerton received 24 points, just six points behind CSUN who was voted by six of the eight coaches to take first place in the South Division with 30 points. The Titans also earned the remaining two first place votes.
The Titans won back-to-back conference championships in 2014 and 2015 and were under a minute away from heading to penalty kicks and a chance to raise the trophy for the third consecutive year before a late unfortunate goal ended those dreams.
Fullerton now looks to put last season behind it and return to its winning ways and regain dominance in the Big West for the third time in four years.
After receiving All-Big West second team and honorable mention nods in 2016, respectively, Ross McPhie and Robert Coronado have been named to the 2017 preseason All-Big West team. The duo finished last season tied with each other for second on the team with eight points.
McPhie was a key part of the Titans attack all last season as he finished with three goals and two assists. The junior midfielder proved his composure and clutch ability last season as he netted two game winning goals for the Titans.
Coronado was a mainstay for Fullerton as he appeared in every game in 2016. He also had a huge hand in setting up the Fullerton offense with scoring chances, ending the season with a six assists which ranked fifth in the Big West. Along with his six assists, Coronado netted one goal while firing 15 shots on net throughout the season.
Fans can catch their last glimpse of the team at Titan Stadium Saturday at 11 p.m. before they head out on the road for their first two games of the regular season.
