FULLERTON, Calif. – A goal headed in by Nigel Patterson in the 88th minute pushed Cal State Fullerton past UC Davis at Titan Stadium on Saturday night for their first Big West 2-0 start since joining the conference in 2001.
Cal State Fullerton (7-4, 2-0 Big West) battled all night against UC Davis in an aggressive match that led to two Fullerton yellow cards and a season-high 19 shots from the Titans.
Throughout the majority of the first half, the Titans and Aggies battled back and forth, taking shots one right after the other. Around the 30 minute mark, Fullerton kicked it into gear pulling ahead of the Aggies with five shots and four corners within approximately ten minutes to close out the first half.
After a tough both physical and emotional battle between the two teams in the second half, Fullerton's opportunity finally arose. A loose ball after a corner kick found Julian Okai who took a shot which after found Okirie who chipped it to Patterson who headed the goal in for his first of the season.
Fullerton accrued a season-high 14 corner kicks while Titan goalkeeper David Rodriguez Elias logged four saves to notch his sixth shutout of the year.
The Titans saw shots from 11 different Titans while Ronaldo Pineda and Diego Sanchez led Fullerton with four shots apiece.
Fullerton continues Big West play on Thursday when they travel up north to take on Cal Poly followed by Santa Barbara on Saturday.
NOTES: The Titans lead all-time against the Aggies 9-7-3 and have won the last two meetings… Patterson had one goal last season which was also a game-winner… Fullerton has seen game-winning goals from six different Titans this year… Ten different Titans have found the back of the net this season, all three goals this weekend coming from Titans scoring their firsts of the year…. Okirie logged his first assist of 2015 tonight… Fullerton is riding their second three-game winning streak of 2015, the longest so far this year.
