FULLERTON, Calif. – In Cal State Fullerton's final tune-up before the official start of the season next week, three different Titans found the back of the net in 3-0 shutout of the alumni squad.
In the 21st minute, senior forward Marc Fenelus broke the scoreless drought finding an opening near post.
Nine minutes later, rookie Robert Coronado fired a rocket to the left side from outside the box, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.
In the 58th minute, junior Colin Okirie put his head on the end of a Julian Okai corner kick to record Fullerton's third and final goal.
Jay Nettekoven (1987-90) started in goal for the alumni, joining Jaime Cano (2012-13), Peter Kingman (2007), Amir Shafii (2003, 2005-07), Justin Burney (2008-09), Jesse Escalante (2008-12), Nick Dodd, German Moreno (2004-07), James Maynard (2007), Brent Barnes (2001-05) and Skyler Thuresson (2004-07).
Nettekoven recorded five shutouts in 1988 and 1989, still tying for seventh in Titan single-season history. Barnes was three-time Big West Academic All-Conference selection.
The Titans open 2014 under first-year head coach George Kuntz at Illinois-Chicago on Friday, followed by a 7:30 p.m. match on Monday, Sept. 1, at San Diego.
Fullerton's home opener is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, against San Francisco at Titan Stadium.
