FULLERTON, Calif. – After competing in Colorado just a week ago, Cal State Fullerton men's golf heads right back to the Rocky Mountains for the Mark Simpson Invitational hosted by Colorado University at the Colorado National Golf Club.
The Team:
Format: (54 holes) Afternoon practice rounds on Sunday, Sept. 23; 36 holes of continuous play (foursomes) on Monday (Sept. 24) with a shotgun format start at 8:15 a.m. (MDT), 18 holes on Tuesday (Sept. 25) in a staggered shotgun format (top four teams will play in five tee times off No. 1 beginning at 7:55 a.m.; rest in a shotgun at 8:15).
The Course: The tournament will take place at Colorado National Golf Club (CNGC) in Erie, which is located about 12 miles east of Boulder. The championship layout is a 7,676-yard, par-72 configuration, and the greens feature bent grass. CNGC has hosted previous U.S. Amateur qualifiers, Colorado PGA Section championships, the 2011 NCAA Colorado Men's Regional and the 2012 NCAA Women's West Regional.
The Field: (5-man teams/count 4): Cal-Baptist, CSU-Fullerton, CSU-Northridge, Colorado, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist, Northern Colorado, Pacific, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, UC-Riverside, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming. That's 14 schools in all, along with 14 individual slots (four from CU and UCLA, three from Air Force, two from Colorado State and one from Utah) an overall 84-man field. In the early Golfweek rankings (as of Sept. 16), Utah is No. 53, Grand Canyon No. 67, Colorado No. 70, Wyoming No. 83 and Northern Colorado No. 93; in the final 2017- 18 GolfStat rankings, the highest in the field are Colorado (46), Wyoming (80) and Grand Canyon (92).
