2017-18 Men's Golf Season in Review

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's golf wrapped up the 2017-18 season with five top-five finishes this season with its best placing coming at the El Macero Classic where it finished tied for third.

Fullerton dominated the first two rounds of the Big West Championships as they were led the field in first place at the conclusion of both rounds. The Titans were at 6-under par after day one and 7-under par after day two.

While the Titans would have liked a better finish to conclude the year, they did show a lot of promise heading into next season with eight out of the 10 student-athletes returning in 2018-19.

One of the seniors that will be departing the program is Martin Manalo who certainly but an exclamation put on his career at Fullerton with a career-best finish of tied third place at the Big West Championships after shooting a 5-under par 211.

Mark Cobey is the only other senior who will not be returning next season. Cobey had a strong showing in his farewell season as he had four top-20 finishes throughout the year. Cobey's best finish came at the Waves Challenge where he placed tied for 10th with a score of 10-over par 226.

First year transfer Derek Castillo had an impressive season for the Titans, including a first place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational with a 14-under par 202. Castillo far out-played the rest of the field, out-shot the second place finisher by seven strokes. The sophomore finished eight out of the 11 tournaments in the top-20.

Castillo, Cobey and Manalo all earned Big West All-Conferences honors with Castillo being named to the first time while Cobey was named to the second team and Manalo earned honorable mention.

Freshman Dalton Daniel showed great promise for his future in his first year with the Titans, competing in nine out of 11 tournaments. Dalton had his best tournament at the ORU/SFU Spring Break Challenge where he placed tied for 14th with a 7-over par 220.

Two-year veteran Matt Wilson had a solid season for the Titans as he finished in the top-20 five times over the course of the season. Wilson had his best tournament at the Bill Cullum Invitational where he placed tied for 6th with a score of 4-under par 212.

The Titans now look ahead to the 2018-19 season with a majority of the players returning to the squad with another year of experience and knowledge under their belt.
