EL MACERO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's golf moved up two positions in the final round of the El Macero Classic Sunday to finish the tournament tied for third with Texas Tech with a score of 27-over par 891.
The Titans improved in every round of the tournament, starting with a 304 in round one, then scoring a 294 in round two and a 293 in round three. Fullerton was in sixth place after round one but was able to move up three spots by the end of the tournament to head into the Big West tournament on a high note.
Derek Castillo led the Titans with a tied for 12th place finish with a score of 7-over par 223. Castillo, much like the team scores, improved as the tournament went on, shooting a 76 in a round one followed by a 74 in round two and a 73 in round three. Castillo started day three in a tie for 24th place but was able to move up after his 1-over par score in round three.
The duo of Mark Cobey and Matt Wilson finished right behind Castillo in a tie for 14th place at 8-over par 224. Cobey started the tournament with a 5-over par 77 but followed up with a 74 and 73 in the final two rounds.
Martin Manalo may have had the best closing to the tournament of anyone on the Titans as he moved up from tied for 39th to finish tied for 19th with a score of 10-over par 226. Manalo started the tournament slow with a score of 82 but shot even par 72 in rounds two and three.
Dalton Daniel placed tied for 42nd with a score of 15-over par 231 while Michael Sharkey who was competing as an individual finished in 50th place at 18-over par 234.
The Titans look to carry their momentum into the Big West Championship tournament beginning Sunday, April 29 at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry.
