Cal State Fullerton men's golf student-athletes Matt Wilson and Derek Castillo qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur earlier this summer.

Both competed well on the links Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club but were unable to advance to the round of 64. Wilson finished round one with a 9-over par 70 and then answered back in round two of the tournament with a 4-over par 70 to end the day with a total score of 153. 

Castillo missed the cut for the round of 64 by just four strokes, finishing the day 8-over par with a total score of 148. Much like Wilson, Castillo improved on his first round score to finish the day strong with a 2-over par 70. He completed round one on the day with a 6-over par 70. 

"Playing in the US Amateur this year was a good learning experience. It was fun getting to play such a difficult course against the best players in the world," Castillo said. "I didn't play the way I wanted but I was able to learn a lot about my game and what I need to do to improve and help the Titans this year."

Last year as a sophomore with the Titans, Wilson finished the season with an average score of 73, good enough for second best on the team while leading the roster with the most rounds played at 33 total.

Castillo is an incoming sophomore transfer from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As a freshman at UNLV, Castillo played 12 rounds and averaged a score of 75.42 with his lowest score of 68 and a best finish of 11th.

At the age of 16, Castillo competed in the 2014 U.S Amatuer at the Atlanta Athletic Club, he also played in the 2013 Junior Amateur. On June 18 of this year, Castillo finished tied for sixth at the LA City Open Championship.
