Mendoza’s Big Day Not Enough for Titans

STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Nico Mendoza shot a second round score of 69 (-2) on Friday at Stockton Golf and Country Club, but he was the only Titan to produce a score under par as the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team dropped to 10th in the standings after two rounds at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

Fullerton's two-round score of 596 (+28) has the Titans in 10th place as Sacramento State (570; +2) tops the leaderboard followed by Long Beach State (573; +5), Pacific (584; +16), Denver (589; +21) and UC Irvine (591; +23) to round out the top five of the 16-team invitational.

The third and final round of play resumes at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

As a team on Friday, the Titans scored a 293 as Mendoza's second-round 2-under-par 69 bumped the Yorba Linda, Calif., native up to 13th in the standings. His second-round score was his best round of golf yet in the fall as he enters the final day of competition with a total score of 145.

Freshman Matt Wilson is now tied for 24th in the standings after an even-par round of 71 on Friday brought his two-day total to 147.

Tied for sixth after the first 18 holes, freshman Jack Ireland dropped to 44th after a second-round mark of 7-over-par 78 moved his two-day total to 151.

Junior Matt Murphy is tied for 69th in the standings after shooting a second-round score of 75 (+4) on Friday.

Sophomore Mark Cobey shot 78 (+7) in the second round and his total score of 156 has him tied for 74th.

Landon Azevedo (Sacramento State) and Matt Lee (Pacific) enter the third round on Saturday atop the leaderboard with identical two-round totals of 139.

Play resumes at 8:30 a.m., Saturday at Stockton Golf and Country Club in the third and final round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
