PULLMAN, Wash. – Participating in its first tournament of the season, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished third at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate played at Palouse Ridge Golf Course on the campus of Washington State on Tuesday.
With a third-round score of 283, the Titans finished the tournament at 9-under-par for a final score of 843, four strokes behind second-place finisher Seattle (-13, 839) as well as 24 strokes behind champion and host Washington State (-33, 819).
The score of 843 ranks third all-time at Cal State Fullerton for the program's lowest 54-hole team scores. In the Titans last trip to Pullman, Fullerton finished second at the tournament and totaled a mark of 837 in September of 2013.
Redshirt senior Mark Jensma was the top Titan finisher, recording a third-round score 2-under-par 69 to finish his tournament tied for ninth with a total score of 209 (-4). For Jensma, the ninth place finish is the best in his Titan career and the second time he has finished in the top-10.
Freshman Jack Ireland was just a stroke behind as his three-round score of 210 (-3) was good for a 14th-place finish as the native of Mission Viejo, Calif., finished his first competition as a Titan.
Junior Matt Murphy and freshman Matt Wilson each finished with three-round scores of 3-over-par 216 to tie for 30th. Murphy shot an even-par 71 in his third and final round while Wilson fired a 2-over-par 73 on Tuesday.
For Murphy, his 30th place finish, total score of 216 and second-round score of 3-under-par 68 on Monday set career highs for the Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native.
Sophomore Mark Cobey finished the tournament tied for 42nd with a final score of 221 (+8).
Fullerton's third-place finish is the best for the program since winning the Big West Championship on April 29, 2014.
Derek Bayley of Washington State was the top finisher with a score of 201 (-12).
The Titans quickly return to action on Saturday at Cowboy Southern Dunes at Southern Dunes Golf Course hosted by Wyoming in Maricopa, Ariz.
