SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first day of competition at the Big West Championship in seventh place at the SLO Country Club on Sunday.

The Titans recorded an opening-round mark of 300 (+20), and trail UC Riverside (+6, 286), UC Davis (+8, 288), Cal Poly (+9, 289), UC Irvine (+9, 289), CSUN (+18, 298) and Long Beach State (+18, 298) after 18 holes. Fullerton is just two-strokes out of the top five squads.  

Senior Josh Park, who shot a 2-over 72 on the afternoon, led Fullerton with his steady play throughout the first round. He finished with a team-high three birdies on Sunday.

UC Riverside's David Gazzolo paced the field after the first day of competition, carding a 3-under 67 to open the event. UC Davis' Mike Brockington (-2, 68), Cal Poly's (E, 70) and UC Irvine's Jacob Schulze (+1, 71) round out the top four on the individual leaderboard while six student-athletes are tied for fifth (+2, 72) including Park.

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Kyle De Silva, who finished his round with a 5-over 75, was the other Titan to finish within the top 25 in a tie for 23rd, sinking a pair of birdies over his first 18 holes. CSF senior Ryan Tetrault (+5, 75) finished the day in 23rd and leads the event in par-3 scoring (3.00), while sinking a team-high 13 holes at par or better.

Santiago Canyon College transfer Nico Mendoza (+7, 77) and freshman Mark Cobey (+8, 78) rounded out the Titans for 31st and 36th positions, respectively.

The Big West Championship will continue Monday at 9 a.m. for the second round at the SLO Country Club, a par 70 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Post Season Notes: The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I men's regionals which are held at six sites this year from May 14-16. This year's regional sites include Bremerton, Wash, Chapel Hill, N.C., Lubbock, Texas, New Haven, Conn., Noblesville, Ind. and San Diego, Calif. The six-day NCAA Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 29-June 3 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
