CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.- The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first round of competition hosting the Folino Invitational in fifth place, as the second round was suspended due to darkness after an early morning fog delay at the Industry Hills Golf Club on Monday. The completion of the second round will commence at 7:30 a.m., followed by the final 18-holes tomorrow.
The Titans recorded a first round 303 (+15), and trails Sacramento State (+6, 294), British Columbia (+8, 296), Cal Baptist (+10, 298) and Grand Canyon (+11, 299) to round out the top five squads.
Fullerton seniors Ryan Tetrault and Josh Park shot a first round of 75 (+3), which was good for 15th place to lead the Titans in the team competition, respectively. Competing as an individual, Santiago Canyon College transfer Nico Mendoza posted a team-best 68 (-4) to land in a tie for first place on the leaderboard.
Sacramento State's Aaron Beverly (-4, 68) headlines the field, while British Columbia's Nate Ollis (-3, 69), Grand Canyon's Mariano Rossi (-2, 70) are within two-strokes of the lead. Cal Baptist's Kavan Eubank and Teo Chiesa round out the top five after carding a 1-under 71, respectively.
Cal State Fullerton junior Marcus Mercado-Kiel (+4, 76) and freshman Mark Cobey (+5, 77) became the second and third Titans to place in the top 25, concluding the first round in 17th and 23rd respectively. CSF sophomore Matt Murphy rounded out the five-man team rotation with an 8-over 80, good for 43rd position.
Competing with Mendoza as an individual was Fullerton's Martin Manalo in 10th (+2, 74), Mark Jensma and Kyle De Silva placed 17th with a 4-over 76, respectively, and in 47th was Dominic Reed (+9, 81) who rounded out the 10 student-athletes competing in their host tournament.
The completion of the second round followed by the final 18-holes of the Folino Invitational will wrap up tomorrow at the Industry Hills Golf Club, a par-72, at 7:30 a.m.
