FULLERTON, Calif.- The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first day of competition in 16th place in the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in Westlake Village, Calif., on Monday.
The Titans recorded a 39-over-par 615 after shooting a first round 310 (+22) and second round of 305 (+17). Fullerton trails host Saint Mary's (-6, 570), San Diego (-1, 575), San Francisco (+3, 579) and a pair of 6-over-par 582 teams in Fresno State and Pacific to round out the top-5.
With a total score of 147 (+3), Cal State Fullerton's Kyle De Silva led the Titans after day one in a tie for 26th place. In his first action of the 2014-15 campaign, De Silva posted a first round 72 (E) and second round of 75 (+3).
San Diego's Mathias Dahl (-7, 137) holds the lead in the individual standings, while a pair of golfers are close behind at 5-under-par 139 in Jonathan De Los Reyes (Saint Mary's) and Jake Sherwin (Florida Gulf Coast) to round out the top-3.
Fullerton senior Ryan Tetrault shot a first round 77 (+5), and second round 78 (+6) to finish tied for 68th place with an overall score of 11-over-par 155, including a team-high seven birdies over the first 36-holes.
Fellow CSF senior Josh Park improved from his first round 11-over-par 83 to shave off 10 strokes for a 1-over-par 73 second round. Park recorded an overall score of 156 (+12) to land in a tie for 75th place after the first day of competition.
Santiago Canyon College transfer Nico Mendoza fired an overall score of 159 (+15), while shooting a first round 8-over-par 80 and a second round 7-over-par 79, tie for 84th on the leaderboard.
Marcus Mercado made his Titans debut on the links, completing the five-man rotation in team competition, tallying an overall mark of 165 (+21). The Orange Coast College transfer chipped in a 9-over-par 81 in the opening round, followed by a 12-over-par 84 in the second. The Santa Ana, Calif., native wrapped up his afternoon in 91st place.
The final 18-holes of the Saint Mary's Invitational will wrap up tomorrow at the Bayonet Golf Course, a par 72, at 8 a.m.
