SUGAR GROVE, Ill.- After an over two hour rain delay due to windy conditions in sub 40 degree weather, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its second day of competition in 11th place in the Sugar Grove Regionals at the Rich Harvest Farms Country Club in Sugar Grove, Ill., on Friday afternoon. 


While shooting a 31-over-par 319 first round, the Titans moved up two slots into 11th after chalking up a second round 21-over-par 309. Fullerton improved 10 strokes from the first round of golf to conclude day two with a total score of 628 (+52). In their first appearance in the NCAA regionals since the program was reinstated in 2009-10, Fullerton is currently 11 strokes out of the top-10 heading into the final 18 holes.


After day one, the tenth-seeded Titans trail No. 4 UAB (+8, 584), No. 2 Illinois (+9, 585), No. 6 Clemson (+15, 591), No. 1 California (+17, 593), No. 3 Southern California (+18, 594), No. 8 Purdue (+21, 597), No. 12 Jacksonville State (+32, 608), No. 7 Kent State (+32, 608), No. 13 Cleveland State (+37, 613) and No. 5 UNLV (+41, 617) to round out the top-10.  


With a total score of 81 (+9) through the first round, senior Mark Anguiano showed the most improvement, firing a second round team-best 1-under-par 71 to conclude day two in 29th place after carding a total score of (+8, 152). The Whittier, Calif., native moved up a staggering 25 slots in the leaderboard while pacing the team with eight birdies over the first 36 holes. Anguiano trails individual leader Brian Campbell 139 (-5) of Illinois by 13 strokes, but is just six strokes behind cracking the top-10. 


Day one team-leader Ryan Tetrault shot his way to a total score of 77 (+5) through the first round, and followed that up with a second round 8-over-par 80. The junior concludes day two in 44th place with a mark of 157 (+13). The Villa Park, Calif., native is currently five strokes behind team leader Anguiano.


Senior Corey Gard leaped up 18 slots in the standings, carding a second round of 75 (+3), seven-strokes better than his first round mark of 82 (+10). Along with teammate Tetrault, Gard finished in 44th place, totaling two rounds of play with a 13-over-par 157.


Fellow CSF senior Scott Rubzin chipped in a second round 16-over-par 88 after a first round 7-over-par 79. Rubzin finished tied for 68th place, falling 30 positions to post a combined score of 167 (+23).


Freshman Kyle De Silva stayed steady on the links, following his first round score of 12-over-par 84 with an 11-over-par 83 in the second round, capping his day two total score at 23-over-par 167 to finish in 68th place to round out the Titans.


The final 18 holes of the Sugar Grove Regionals will conclude tomorrow at the Rich Harvest Farms Country Club at 8 a.m. There are four par-5's, 10 par-4's and four par-3's that make up the par-72 course. According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is one of ten top-100 ranked teams in the 14-field regional rated at No. 66. Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 57 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA team rankings, facing a field that features eight competing teams ranked higher than the Titans.
