SUGAR GROVE, Ill.- The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first day of competition in 13th place in the Sugar Grove Regionals at the Rich Harvest Farms Country Club in Sugar Grove, Ill., on Thursday.


In their first appearance in the NCAA regionals since the program was reinstated in 2009-10, the Titans shot 319 to finish 31-over-par after the first round of play. Heading into the final 36 holes, Fullerton is currently four strokes out of the top-10.

After day one, the tenth-seeded Titans trail No. 4 UAB (+4, 292), No. 2 Illinois (+5, 293), No. 6 Clemson (+11, 299), No. 7 Kent State (+11, 299), No. 3 Southern California (+14, 302), No. 12 Jacksonville State (+14, 302), No. 1 California (+17, 305), No. 5 UNLV (+20, 308), No. 8 Purdue (+21, 309), No. 9 Mississippi State (+27, 315) and No. 13 Cleveland State (+27, 315) to round out the top-10.


With a total score of 77 (+5) through the first round, junior Ryan Tetrault is in 28th place, trailing individual leader Brian Campbell 69 (-3) of Illinois by eight strokes. The Villa Park, Calif., native leads the team with three birdies on the afternoon.  


Senior Scott Rubzin fired a first round of 7-over-par 79, good for a tie in 38th place. Rubzin is currently two strokes behind team leader Tetrault. Fellow CSF Senior Mark Anguiano concluded the first round carding a 9-over-par 81, tied for 54th on the leaderboard.


Corey Gard
landed in a tie for 62nd in the standings after shooting a first round tally of 82 (+10). Freshman Kyle De Silva posted a 12-over-par 84 outing after day one, sitting tied for 69th place to round out the Titans.


The next 18 holes of the Sugar Grove Regionals will continue tomorrow at the Rich Harvest Farms Country Club at 8 a.m. There are four par-5's, 10 par-4's and four par-3's that make up the par-72 course. According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is one of ten top-100 ranked teams in the 14-field regional rated at No. 66. Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 57 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA team rankings, facing a field that features eight competing teams ranked higher than the Titans.
