Titans Selected as No. 10 Seed in NCAA Regionals

FULLERTON, Calif. – After capturing its second consecutive Big West Championship last week, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team has been selected as an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division I Regionals in Sugar Grove, Ill., it was announced by the NCAA on Monday. Selected as the No. 10 seed in the bracket, Fullerton will tee off at the Rich Harvest Farms Country Club in the three-day postseason tournament on May 15-17.


Hosted by Northern Illinois, Fullerton will be one of six teams in the 14-team regional that earned an automatic bid from winning its respective conference championships.


The Rich Harvest Farm Country Club plays at 7,151 yards from the tournament tees and par 72 for the 54-hole event, with 18 holes played each day. Play begins at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15 for the first round, continuing with a start on Friday, May 16 at 8:00 a.m. for the second round, and will conclude Saturday, May 17 for the final 18 holes at 7:30 a.m.


The University of California garnered the top seed in the regional, followed by No. 2 Illinois, No. 3 USC, No. 4 Alabama-Birmingham, No. 5 UNLV, No. 6 Clemson, No. 7 Kent State, No. 8 Purdue, No. 9 Mississippi State, No. 10 Cal State Fullerton, No. 11 New Mexico State, No. 12 Jacksonville State, No. 13 Cleveland State and No. 14 Saint Peter's.


Scoring will be based on five players from each team, with only the low four scores counted each round. Live scoring will be available for the regional at Golfstat.com for all days. Fullerton senior Mark Anguiano currently leads the Big West Conference with a 69.72 stroke average and tallied nine top 10 performances over the course of the 2013-14 season, including two individual medalist honors and a tie for second place at the conference championship. Anguiano led the Titans to their ninth top-five team finish in 11 events and first berth to the NCAA Division I Regionals since the program was reinstated for the 2009-10 season.


Only one other Big West team was selected for the men's golf championship, the Aggies of UC Davis were given an at-large bid as a No. 11 seed in the Auburn, Ala., NCAA Regional.


Overall, six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17.  Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.


The finals will be conducted May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. Wichita State is the host institution for the 2014 championships.
