SAN JACINTO, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team has claimed the school's second consecutive Big West Men's Golf Championship after sharing the crown with Pacific last season. Due to high winds and unplayable conditions for the final round, the tournament was deemed to be final after 36 holes at the Soboba Springs Country Club in San Jacinto, Calif., on Tuesday.

With the conference title comes an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I men's regionals, a first-time accolade since the Fullerton golf program was reinstated during the 2009-10 season.

After many attempts to get the third and final round completed, wind speeds of up to 40 mph proved to be too much, and the final round of competition was cancelled, awarding the leader after day two the 2014 championship.  This is the first time the tournament has been shortened since 2003 when rain allowed just two rounds of competition.

"The start was delayed until 9:00 a.m. and we observed the first 50 minutes of play and found that golf balls weren't holding on the greens," stated Rob Halvaks, deputy commissioner. "With no prediction of certainty of when the conditions would be playable, we met with the SCGA rules officials and determined cancelling the final round was our only option."

After 36 holes of play, the Titans shot a 1-under-par 287 first round, and held on to the lead in the team standings after chalking up a second round 3-over-par 291 to conclude the championship with a total score of 578 (+2). Fullerton finishes two strokes ahead of UC Davis, who claimed the 2011 and 2012 titles.

In the final team standings, the Titans are followed by UC Davis (+4, 580), UC Riverside (+10, 586), Long Beach State (+11, 587) and UC Irvine (+12, 588) to round out the top-five.

Fullerton was the only Big West team to place all five participants in the top-20 on the individual leaderboard and the win propels the Titans to their ninth top-five team finish in 11 events this year. Since Fullerton's reinstatement in 2009-10, the Titans men's golf team has improved in its overall finish in every year at the Big West Championships (2010- Ninth Place; 2011- Eighth Place; 2012- Third Place; 2013- Tied for First Place; 2014- First Place).   

With a total score of 68 (-4) through the first round, senior Mark Anguiano followed up with a second round 1-over-par 73 to conclude the event tied for second place with a mark of 3-under-par 141 while carding his ninth top-three finish of the season. The Whittier, Calif., native was the only Titan to fire a score in the 60's over the two rounds, chalking up his team-high 16th round in that range.

Anguiano trailed Matt Hansen of UC Davis by five strokes as the Aggie shot a 3-under-par 69 in the second round, en route to a total score of (-8, 136) and becoming the eventual individual champion after the third round was cancelled.

Fellow CSF senior Corey Gard showed the most improvement after the first day of play shooting a team-best second round of 70 (-2), four-strokes better than his first round mark of 74 (+2). Gard advanced six slots in the standings to finish tied for ninth place, totaling two rounds of play with an even-par 144.

Junior Ryan Tetrault followed his first round score of 72 (E), with a second round 75 (+3) to produce an overall score of 3-over-par 147, dropping seven slots into a tie for 14th place.

Concluding team competition for the second time in the spring as a member of the five-man rotation, senior Scott Rubzin chipped in a second round 1-over-par 73 after a first round 2-over-par 74. Rubzin finished tied with teammate Tetrault for a season-best 14th place, while posting a combined score of (+3, 147).

Freshman Kyle De Silva followed his first round score of 1-over-par 73 with a 76 (+4) in the second round, capping his total score for the tournament at 5-over-par 149 to finish tied for 19th place to round out the Titans.

During Cal State Fullerton's Division II era, the men's golf team made previous trips to the postseason highlighted by Paul Wise garnering the men's individual championship in 1973.

The men's golf team becomes the second Titan team to advance to the NCAA Tournament, as the Fullerton women's soccer team participated in postseason action also during the 2013-14 season after winning the Big West Tournament.  

Post Season Notes: Cal State Fullerton advances to the NCAA Division I men's regionals as the conference automatic qualifier.  This year's six site are at Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.), Lonnie Pool Golf Course (Raleigh, N.C.), The Club at Old Hawthorne (Columbia, Mo.), Briggs Ranch Golf Club (San Antonio, Texas), Eugene Country Clun (Eugene, Ore.), Rich Harvest Farms (Sugar Grove, Ill.).  The six-day NCAA Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.  

Selections for the regionals are slated for Monday, May 5 at 7:00 a.m. (PDT) on the Golf Channel.
