EL MACERO, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team completed play at the El Macero Classic at the El Macero Country Club in El Macero, Calif. on Sunday. After finishing in second place after the first two-rounds, the Titans stayed consistent in the final round to hold on for second in the tournament.


The Titans shot 580 (+4) over the first day of play, including a 295 (+7) second round and a score of 292 (+4) on Sunday afternoon in the third round to finish 872 (+8). UC Davis walked away with the victory with a score of 856 (-8), concluding the day as the only team to finish with an overall score under-par while being 16-strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.


The Aggies shot a 294 (+4) final round on Saturday. UC Davis was followed by Cal State Fullerton (872, +8), Grand Canyon (882, +18), Nevada (885, +21) and Sacramento State (886, +22) to round out the top-five. 


The tournament, hosted by UC Davis and Nevada, included three teams currently ranked in the top-100 by Golfstat.com, No. 54 Cal State Fullerton, No. 72 UC Davis and No. 89 Nevada.


Senior Mark Anguiano dropped one slot in individual position from day two in shooting a final round 75 (+3) to fall into second place with a 4-under-par 212 to lead the Titans. Anguiano shot a second round score of 72 (E) after a team best first round 7-under-par 65. The Whittier, Calif., native inked his eighth top-three individual finish of the season.


Junior Ryan Tetrault (217, +1), improved four slots in the final day to finish the event tied for fourth after recording a score of 72 (E), on his final round on Sunday. Tetrault led the team with 13 birdies over the three-day event.


The El Macero Classic was the second consecutive event that two Titans have finished in the top-10 individual standings after Anguiano finished 3rd and Tetrault in 8th at the Desert Shootout on Mar. 20-22 in Goodyear, Ariz. Fullerton also recorded the eighth top-five team finish in 10 events this year.


Fullerton freshman Kyle De Silva finished his third round marking a 1-under par 71 to conclude the tournament with an overall score of 225 (+9) for the Titans. De Silva showed the most improvement in the standing, leaping 21 slots to finish tied for 25th place.


Senior Corey Gard finished tied for 27th with an overall score of 226 (+10) after shooting a final round of 7-over-par 79.


Completing team competition for the first time in the spring as a member of the five-man rotation, senior Scott Rubzin shot his best round on Sunday, marking a third round of 74 (+2), 1-stroke better than his second round of 75 (+3), and 8-strokes better than his first round 7-over-par 82. Rubzin finished tied for 51st place, totaling three days of play with a 15-over-par 231 to round out the Titans.


Wrapping up the spring portion of the golf schedule, the Titans will return to the links at the Big West Conference Championships on Apr. 27-29, in San Jacinto, Calif., at the Soboba Springs Country Club. Fullerton looks to have another strong showing at the conference tournament after capturing a share of the Big West Championship with Pacific last year.
