FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team completed play at the Desert Shootout at the Palm Valley Country Club in Goodyear, Ariz. on Saturday. After finishing in first place after the first two-rounds, the Titans dropped three slots to finish fourth in the tournament.
The Titans shot 555 (-21) over the first day of play, including a 274 (-14) second round and a score of 280 (-8) on Saturday afternoon in the third round to finish 835 (-29). UMKC walked away with the victory after finishing the tournament with a score of 833 (-31) while clinching a one-hole playoff for the crown.
The Kangaroos shot a 274 (-14) final round on Saturday. UMKC was followed by BYU (833, -31), Idaho (834, -30), Cal State Fullerton (835, -29) and Kansas State (841, -23) to round out the top-five.
The tournament, hosted by Kansas State, included two teams currently ranked in the top-50 by Golfstat.com, No. 36 BYU and No. 45 Cal State Fullerton.
Senior Mark Anguiano matched his individual position from day two in shooting a final round 69 (-3) to finish in tied for third with a 12-under-par 204 to lead the Titans. Anguiano shot a team best of 66 (-6) in the second round after a first round 3-under-par 69.
Junior Ryan Tetrault (207, -9) ended the tournament tied for eighth after recording a team best score of 66 (-6) on his final round on Saturday.
The Desert Shootout was the first event since the Folino Invitational on Feb. 17-18 that two Titans have finished in the top-10 individual standings.
Senior Corey Gard finished tied for 15th with an overall score of 210 (-6) after shooting a final round of 1-under-par 71.
Fullerton freshman Kyle De Silva finished his third round marking a 2-over par 74 to conclude the tournament with an overall score of 216 (E) for the Titans. De Silva's overall score of 216 chalked up his lowest total score this season.
Junior Josh Park shot 80 (+8) on Saturday and ended the tournament 15-over par 231 to tie for 82nd in the standings.
Senior Scott Rubzin competed as an individual in the event firing a 74 (+2) third round with a total score of 221 to stand at 5-over-par to finish tied for 59th place. Rubzin's mark of 221 was also a season-low.
The Titans will be back in action on Apr. 18-20 as they compete in the Winchester Classic in Meadow Vista, Calif., at the Winchester Country Club.
