Anguiano, Tetrault Pace Titans to First Place After Day One

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton senior Mark Anguiano fired a tournament single-round record and team low 66 (-6) on Monday, helping the host Titans improve two strokes on the second round from the first to land in first place (572, -4) after 36 holes at the 2014 Folino Invitational at the Industry Hills Golf Club.

Anguiano's first round 10-under total on Monday missed matching his school single-round record of 65 by one stroke, in which he accomplished that feat at the Warrior Princeville Invite on Nov. 4 in Princeville, Hawaii. The Titans catalyst tied for the Industry Hills Golf Club course record with current teammate Ryan Tetrault who shot 66 (-6) in the 2013 Folino Invitational Tournament.

The Whittier, Calif., native was the only Titan to shoot both rounds under 70 strokes, which propelled him to hold onto his first place finish in the opening round en route to an overall day one leader after the second round. Anguiano's combined first and second round score (134, -10) is a new course record that was previously held by Sacramento State's Ryan Williams who set a mark of (139, -5) last year to finish tied for first as an individual champion.

Four Fullerton players finished in the top-10, and five in the top-25, as the Titans finished at four-under-par for the day with a total of 572. The Titans shot a first round of 287 and a second round of 285, which was just one shot off the single-round tournament record of 284 set by Cal Poly and UC Irvine in 2011. Cal State Fullerton is 14 shots in the lead of UC Irvine, which fired a 10-over-par 586 for the tournament, and eight shots ahead of Sacramento State in third place after the Hornets shot a 12-over-par 588 on Monday.

Grand Canyon's Mark Geddes finished with a 5-over-par 77 for the second round and is the individual, 36-hole leader with a 6-over-par 150.

Junior Tetrault, who held a share of fifth-place after the first round, shot a second-round 70 to climb three spots into sole possession of second place at 1-under-par for the tournament while senior Corey Gard, who was tied for 10th at the end of the first round, finished tied for seventh with a first round 74 (+2), and second round 73 (+1) to shoot an overall of (147, +3).

Senior Scott Rubzin, sophomore Mark Jensma, and freshman Matt Murphy all competed as an individual, firing a total score of 156 to stand at 12-over-par while all tied for 31st for the tournament, respectively. Jensma finished with a second round 79 (-7), while Rubzin and Murphy each finished with a 77 (-5) final round to conclude the day.

Freshman Kyle De Silva concluded the day tied for 10th place, shooting a mark of 74 (+2) in both the first and second rounds to finish with a 148, four-over-par. Senior Josh Park moved up 12 spots after a second-round 76 (+4) to a tie for 18th place at 10-over-par to round out the Titans.

Play concludes on Tuesday with the final 18 holes of the Folino Invitational beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Live scoring for the final round will be available at http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/index.cfm?tournament_id=5087.
