Short-Handed Hawai'i Pulls Away from Cold Titans

HONOLULU, HI – Negus Webster-Chan scored 18 points and Roderick Bobbitt added 17 Saturday night to lead a short-handed Hawai'I team to an 81-61 Big West Conference victory over Cal State Fullerton.

Webster-Chan made a career-high six 3-point baskets in 12 attempts for the Rainbow Warriors (18-9, 6-5), who came into the game minus one regular and then lost two more to injuries, one more to five fouls and one to two technicals.

Fullerton (9-16, 1-9) was led by Lanerryl Johnson with 23 points and got 11 from Josh Gentry.    Fullerton played without injured leading scorer Alex  Harris, who averages better than 16 points per game.

Hawai'I outscored the Titans 41-23 in the second half as Fullerton made only 7 of 30 shots after a 13-for-26 performance in the first period, which ended with them down only 40-38.

Overall, the 'Bows  shot 50 percent from the floor and made 10 of 23 3-point tries.  Fullerton made only 4 of 21 treys.

Steve McClellan, the leading rebounder in the Big West at better than 8 per game, bested his average with 10 rebounds and had 9 points, all in the first half.

Hawai'I took control with a 12-3 burst to open the second half.  The Titans' last gasp came with about 7 minutes to play when Gentry made four free throws, the result of Garrett Nevels getting two technical fouls, to cut the lead to 65-53.  But Hawai'I scored the next 9 points to clinch it.

Fullerton's only lead of the game was 15-13 at the 13:34 mark of the first half.

The Titans won the rebounding battle, 35-33, but committed 15 turnovers to 7 for the 'Bows, who turned them into 20 points.

Fullerton is now 0-5 vs. Hawai'I since the 'Bows joined the Big West Conference.

Fullerton is home next week for a Thursday night game at 7:05 p.m. vs. Cal Poly and a Saturday game at 5:05 p.m. vs. UC Santa Barbara that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
