Late Run Spurs Titans to Opening Win at Spartanburg Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior guard Lanerryl Johnson scored a game-high 27 points and the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball team used a late run over the final three minutes to erase a five-point deficit as the Titans opened the Spartanburg Marriott Upstate Classic with a 67-62 victory over Wright State on Thursday at the Hodge Center.

For the second-straight game, Johnson led the Titans in scoring on 7-of-10 shooting while knocking down three 3-pointers and converting 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Josh Gentry poured in 14 points off the bench for the Titans, while Alex Harris chipped in 10 points. For the fifth-straight game, Joe Boyd led Cal State Fullerton (2-3) with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Raiders led by as many as 13 in the game, but at the 2:52 mark of the second half, the Titans trailed 61-56, before piecing together an 11-1 run to end the game.

Buckets by Johnson and Steve McClellan tied the game at 61-61 with 1:47 to go, and Gentry put the Titans ahead 63-61 with a lay-up at the 1:06 mark. Johnson scored Fullerton's four final points at the free-throw line.

During the run, the Titans shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor and a near perfect 5-of-6 from the charity stripe while Wright State (3-2) shot 0-of-8 from the floor.

JT Yoho led Wright State with 20 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Reggie Arceneaux scored 15 points and dished a game-high four assists while Steven Davis added 10 points off the bench for the Raiders.

The Titans shot just 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from the floor in the first half, but improved that clip to 52.2 percent (12-of-23) in the second half. The Titans held a 40-31 advantage on the boards, and outscored Wright State 30-18 in the paint.

The Raiders shot 37.0 percent (20-of-54) from the field.

Fullerton trailed 33-28 at halftime, but Wright State had led by 13, 24-11, at the 9:15 mark of the first half. Fullerton ended the first period on a 17-9 run.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action at 3 p.m., Friday, playing host USC Upstate. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Notes: Lanerryl Johnson has led the Titans in scoring three times this season and his 27 points are a season high for a Titan this year…Joe Boyd has led or shared the lead in rebounds for five-straight games and his 10 rebounds on Thursday night set a season high for a Titan…the Titans erased a 13-point deficit in the win.
